Problem Set

in

Gravimetric and Volumetric Analysis

1. (5 pts.) A sample of pure CaCO3 weighing 0.2428g is dissolved in HCl acid and the solution
diluted to 250.0ml in a volumetric flask. A 50.00 ml aliquot requires 42.74ml of an EDTA solution
for titration.
a. Calculate the molarity of the EDTA solution
b. Calculate the number of grams of Na2H2Y.2H2O (MW = 372.2) required to prepared 1 liter of
the solution.

2. (5 pts) A standard solution of EDTA is prepared, and by titration each ml is found to complex
with the Mg in 10.0ml of a solution containing 0.300g of MgCl2 per liter. A 100 ml pipetful of a
certain well water is found to require 8.60 ml of the standard EDTA. (With the knowledge that
the conventional method of expressing water hardness in terms of ppm of CaCO3 regardless of
the nature of the Carbons and anions actually present, what is the hardness of the well water?

3. (10) A sample consists of 80.00% KCN, 15.00% KCl, and 5.00% K2SO4
a. A 0.5000g sample would require how many ml of 0.1000 M AgNO3 for titration to a
permanent turbidity?
b. If 80.00 ml more of the AgNO3 is added, how many ml of 0.2000 M KCNS would be required
to complete the titration

4. (5 pts.) A 0.4574 g sample containing only NaCN and KCN requires 41.65 ml of 0.1065 M AgNO3
for titration, Calculate the percentage of NaCN in the sample.

5. (5 pts.) A solution of Na3PO4 that is 0.2000 N as a salt is used to precipitate the Mg as MgNH4PO4
from a 1.000 g sample of dolomite containing 14.01% MgCO3, What volume is theoretically
required?

6. (5 pts.) What is the solubility of PbI2 in 0.0426 M Pb(NO3)2 solution? Ksp = 7.9x10-9

7. (10 pts.) A sample consisting of a mixture of Na2SO3 and inert matter weighs 1.468 g and is
added to 100.0 ml of 0.1000 N I2. The excess is treated with 42.40 ml of thiosulfate solution of
which 1.000 ml is equivalent to the I2 liberated by an oxidizing agent from 0.01574 g of KI.
Calculate the percentage of Na2S2O3 in the sample.
8. (15 pts.) A Ferrous solution contains 1.176g of FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O in 30.0 ml; a dichromate
solution contains 0.2940 g of K2Cr2O7 in 20.00 ml.
Find: A. the N of the Ferrous solution as a reducing agent.
B. the N of the dichromate solution as an oxidizing agent.
C. the volume of the dichromate equivalent to 1.000 ml of the Ferrous solution.

9. (5 pts.) A 0.2700 g of impure Na2CO3 required 24.12 ml 0f 0.1684 M HCl and a back titration with
2.96 ml of NaOH solution. The volume ratio of the acid to the base is 1.250. Calc. the % Na2CO3 in
the sample

10. A 1.000 g sample of a mixture of K2CO3 and KHCO3 yielded 0.4000 g of Carbon dioxide (CO2)
upon ignition. What weight od each compound was present in the mixture.
