Questions
2. A hollow mild steel shaft having 100 mm external diameter and 50 mm internal diameter
is subjected to a twisting moment of 8 kNm and a bending moment of 2.5 kNm.
(a) Calculate the principal stresses
(b) Find the direct stress which, acting alone would produce the same stress as that
produced by the principal stresses acting together, using:
i. Maximum elastic strain energy theory
ii. Maximum elastic shear strain energy theory
3. A propeller shaft of 240 mm external diameter and 180 mm internal diameter has to
transmit 1100 kW at 100 rpm. It is additionally subjected to a bending moment of 10 kNm
and an end thrust of 200 kN. Determine:
(a) Principal stresses and their planes
(b) Maximum shear stress
4. For a 60° rosette, the respective strains measured at angles 0°, 60° and 120° are +0.0002,
+0.0002 and -0.0003. Find the principal stresses and their directions. The stress condition
is two dimensional in the plane of measurements. (Take 𝐸 = 200 GN/m2 and 𝜈 = 0.3).

6. A T-beam (120 mm deep) used as a beam with simply supported ends so that the flange
comes under tension is shown in Figure 1. The material of the beam can be subjected to
stresses of 75 MN/m2 in compression and 25 MN/m2 in tension. It is required that a
balanced design is achieved so that the largest possible bending stresses are reached
simultaneously. Determine
(a) The width of the flange
(b) The magnitude of concentrated load that can be applied to the beam at its center if the
span length is 6 meters
Figure 1: T-beam
7. An I-section girder simply supported over a span of 8 meters carries a uniformly distributed
load of 100 kN/m over the entire span (See Figure 2). The beam is strengthened by the
addition of 15 mm thick flanges, wherever necessary.
(a) Determine the length and width of the flanges such that the maximum stress due to
bending does not exceed 125 MN/m2.

8. In a steel member, at a point the major principal stress is 180 MN/m2, and the minor
principal stress is compressive. If the tensile yield point of the steel is 225 MN/m2, find the
value of the minor principal stress at which yielding will commence according to each of
the following criteria of failure:
(a) Maximum shear stress theory
(b) Maximum strain energy theory
(c) Maximum shear strain energy theory
Take 𝜐 = 0.26
9. A thin cylindrical tube 80 mm internal diameter and 5 mm thick, is closed at the ends and
is subjected to an internal pressure of 6 MN/m2. A torque of 2009.6 Nm is also applied to
the tube. Find the:
(a) hoop stress
(b) longitudinal stress
(c) Principal stresses
(d) Maximum shear stress
10. A block of material is subjected to a tensile strain of 12 × 10−6 and a compressive strain
of 15 × 10−6 on planes at right angles to each other. There is also a shear strain of
12 × 10−6 and there is no strain on planes at right angles to the above planes. Calculate
the principal strains in magnitude and direction.
