Building Blocks of Milking
Milking Philosophy
For more than 80 years together with specialists and customers
from around the world, we have continuously been optimizing
our milking philosophy. The result is a fast, effective and above
all animal-friendly, gentle milking process that uses high quality
products from a world market leader.
Preparation Procedure
Milking begins with udder preparation. In addition to hygiene
and quality requirements udder preparation is an important
component for the stimulation process.
Cluster
Choose your individual cluster from our modular system that features
a wide variety of coordinated components suited to meet your needs.
Results are better fitting, ergonomic handling, a stable vacuum and
optimum milk flows.
GEA
Cluster Positioning
GEA Farm Technologies’ positioning aids assure even weight distribution of udder
quarters and well thought out tube guiding. The results are shorter milking times and
gentle handling of your animals.
Pulsation
Vacuum Supply
GEA Farm Technologies vacuum systems are designed to provide consistent and
stable vacuum at the proper level to the teat to assure safe and efficient milking.

Pre-stimulation is important
GEA
Effective udder stimulation
The willingness of the cow to be milked depends on the udder stimulation before milking starts. Whether by hand or by
machine the stimulation triggers a nerve stimulus which will be transmitted over the spinal cord to the hypothalamus. There the
stimulus will be switched to other nerves and transmitted to a part of the pituitary. The pituitary finally releases the hormone
oxytocin which accumulates on the basket cells of the udder alveoli. By contracting the milk is forced out of the aveoli into the
milk duct system an into the udder cistern.
GEA Farm Technologies has developed its own processes for automatic milking according to the milking philosophy. The teat
cup liners have a unique, flexible mouthpiece to fit any udder. When the liners move they cause stimulated milking. This
process enables fast and completely milking.
The result: more milked cows per hour.
GEA Farm Technologies offers high-quality products for automatic or manual milking processes.

Vacuum
The daily milking has to be complete, gentle and quick. This is to keep the udder active, effective and healthy. The
amount of the milking vacuum, teat cup liners and pulsation have a determinant effect for stripping quality, milking speed,
teat condition and udder health. In many milking productions the milking vacuum is too high. To many different guidelines
and tips may cause irritation.
We developed our milking technology according to the low vacuum principle. With a vacuum of 48 kPa you will be able to
milk your animals gentle but fast.
A constant milking vacuum is much more than a mere calculation of pump capacity and milk line diameter! Many years
of experience have lead to a parlour design which matches pump capacity to certain pipeline diameters. The result is a
constant vacuum in all parts of the milking installation.
Our key matter of concern is safety: Our principal is to provide you with a generous vacuum performance that can
compensate easily for sudden and unpredictable vacuum swings due to unexpected air inlets.
One of the most important conditions for gentle, economical milking is a low, constant milking vacuum at the udder. Top
technology from GEA Farm Technologies supplies you with the matching products.
Constant milking vacuum means less stress for teats and udder
Optimal designed claw pieces stabilize the vacuum

The pressure on the teat
This chart shows the sequences during milking, including vacuum sequences.
The blue coloured area is important for the pressure on the teat.
Only at 10 kPa after the collapse force of the liner will the liquids be moved through the effects of the massage pressure.
If the pressure becomes too high, the teat will be deformed.
Our recommendation:
Vacuum in the discharge phase below the teat minus collapse force.
The result should be around 10 and 25 kPa, but not over 30 kPa.

Pulsation
If cows should be healthy and if they should produce enough high-quality milk, there are high demands on a modern milking
installation. So it is very important to optimize the different pulsation parameters for a comfortable, quick and complete milking.
According to GEA Farm Technologies` milking philosophy our pulsator in combination with the electronic sensors and milk
meters monitor and control the whole milking process. The pulsator take care for the stimulation and mobilize milking and
performance willingness of the animals.
Milking must start directly after stimulation to gain maximum effect from the hormone oxytocin, which is only effective for a few
minutes. Automatically pulsator gently switch to milking without any delay.
They always work accurate even in changing environmental conditions. Thanks to the perfectly controlled phases of
stimulation and milking you will gain a higher milk yield, healthier udders and improved milk quality with more milk content.

Free Milk flow
For a fast but gentle milking the milk has to flow free. The optimal positioning of the cluster is a key component for
successful milking. It should hang straight and free at the udder below the cow.
The cluster is the link between milking machine and animal. To hold the milking line vacuum steady at the teats the
milk channels in the cluster have to avoid flow losses. Otherwise flow losses will cause vacuum fluctuations
depending on the milk flow. Only with well positioned clusters and with compatible tube and line systems you will
get a constant level of complete milking, a good milk flow without permanent milking and low leverage forces of the
milk tubes to the teat cups.
The comprehensive GEA Farm Technologies program will offer many single components with a modular design.
So you can satisfy the animals` requirements as well as the milkers. With our products you prevent inclusions of
air, adhesion problems, up-moving teat cups and harmful blind milking. Instead the milk will flow free and the udder
will stay healthy.

Automatic cluster removal
Our milking control units do many different tasks for you: stimulation, pulsation, automatic stripping and cluster removal -
intelligent technology for first class milking results and perfectly milked animals. We plead for more animal health with gentle
but complete milk out. You can control this perfect and as you like automatically with our milking control units which
determine the best time for cluster removal.
A time-controlled automatic cluster removal takes care of the udder and therewith animals health in case of any milking
process. With the help of an electronically controlled motor DeMax 50T and DemaTron 50T automatically and gently remove
the cluster when the milk flow stops.
Before the motor puts pressure on the cluster, the milking control unit shuts off the vacuum. That means that the cluster
gently releases from the udder. Only now the motor starts up and registers exactly how strong his traction is. If it is to high
the motor automatically reduces the traction and then carefully begins to increase it again.
This removal technique is extremely sensitive and animal-friendly. At the same time, removing the milking equipment with an
electronic motor saves space in the barn. Over-milking and blind milking will be things of the past.

Teat dipping
High milk yields and best milk quality you can only get if your animals have healthy udders and
teats. Regular monitoring is not enough - prophylaxis is better. Immediately after milking the
infection risk is particularly high. Teat dipping is an effective proven method to avoid that germs will
enter the extended milk duct.
GEA Farm Technologies has developed a wide range of products for teat dipping. Best ingredients
in combination with a very good teat care provide safe and fast disinfection. And you will see what
you are doing: The teat dips for udder hygiene are dyed and they stick well at the teats. Disease
causing germs will be eliminated. The care components will last long on the skin and so do the
disinfection and care.
Directly after milking the udder there is a particularly high risk of teat
infection. All too often this time is not given the attention it deserves.
GEA Farm Technologies has top class barrier dips with
all of the properties needed for reliable protection and
excellent care. We ensure a product with reliable disinfection and
support the regeneration of the stressed teat skin. It keeps the
teats soft and supple. The special formula keeps the water-soluble,
non-drying protective film wet thus prolonging the action
of the active ingredients.
