Film Review of Freedom Writers
The film ‘Freedom Writers' tells the story of Mrs. Erin Gruwell, an inexperienced
English teacher who took on the job of teaching English to pupils at Woodrow Wilson
High School, where there are many tensions such as prejudice, racism, injustice, gang
battles, and violence. Woodrow Wilson High School can be compared to our society
teaching is a simple job, but after watching the movie, Mrs. Gruwell demonstrates how
she disciplined her kids to the point of sacrificing her own personal life for them. She
was so committed to teaching that she was willing to take out her own money, work
double shifts, and be ridiculed and belittled by the department head in order to educate
her students. She improved the lives of the students with these small gestures. Here,
she’s determination can be compared to the resilience of the Filipinos where even we
are facing crisis, we are bouncing back from the bottom. We always smile at all times
even though in that time, we are dejected. I recognize that as students, we sometimes
overlook the value of a teacher in our life. We get annoyed with them occasionally
because they give us a hard time in tests, piles of readings, and assignments, but it's all
in the name of educating us. I learnt that a teacher's job is more than just talking and
writing; it's also planning how to assist pupils improve cognitively and emotionally every
day.
Teachers feel exhausted, too, and find rest when they see us accomplish despite
our flaws, so I'll double down on my studies for their sake as well. Now, I appreciate
their existence for assisting me in being more prepared for life. I learned from Mrs.
Gruwell's personal struggle that even when people fail you, you will always find a way to
recover and move forward. “But even an ordinary secretary, a housewife, or a teenager
can, in their own tiny ways, turn on a small light in a dark room,” Miep Gies said the kids
in the film. which led me to believe that change occurs when someone is willing to take
action and when they see past a person's flaws to see just their potential.
Mrs. Gruwell accomplished this, and we should all do the same because
sometimes all we need is someone who sees the good in us to motivate us to change for
the better. In the life tales of the students, I learned something from Eva, who chose
justice and truth over loyalty and connection in the case of a murder in a convenience
store where his partner killed someone and blamed it on someone else.
Someone can always point out your previous wrongdoings or faults, but this will
have no bearing on your future. I need to put the past behind me and concentrate on
the future. Someone who sees hope always has a beginning, and we must not give up
on them so soon. Mrs. Gruwell herself embodies majority of our students where we are
doing our job that isn’t in our field of education. Mrs. Gruwell fights for what she wants
and gets it, and the kids graduate despite their circumstances, which inspires me to
keep going with what I've started. Mrs. Gruwell herself embodies majority of our
students where we are doing our job that isn’t in our field of education.
