Dynamics - MIDTERM EXAM

Instruction: Solve the following problems. Handwrite your solution on a sheet of paper with your name and
student number written at the upper left corner. Box your final answer, otherwise, your answer will not be
considered. Show your work clearly.

Note: Unless otherwise specified, all answers must be rounded off to 2 decimal places.

1. A particle is moving along a straight path according to the equation 𝑠 = 3𝑡 4 − − 2𝑡 2 + 1, where s is in
2
meters and t in seconds.

(a) Determine its velocity (m/s) after 10 seconds. [3 points]

(b) Determine its acceleration (m/s2) after 10 seconds. [3 points]
(c) Determine his position (m) after 10 seconds. [3 points]
(d) Determine his displacement (m) after 10 seconds. [3 points]

2. A particle initially at rest is moving in a straight path with acceleration increasing uniformly from zero to 6
m/s2 for the first 8 seconds, then decelerates uniformly from zero to “x” m/s2 for the next “t” seconds. If the
particle stops after that “t” seconds, and its position at the time it stops is at 144 m from the origin:

(a) Determine the value of t in seconds. [3 points]

(b) Determine the value of “x” in m/s2. [3 points]

3. A particle starting from rest is moving in a straight path governed by the v-t curve as shown in the figure. If
all curved portions are second degree parabolas with horizontal slope at t = 0 and t = 12 sec, and assuming
that S0 = 0:

(a) Sketch completely the a-t curve. [3 points]

(b) Sketch completely the s-t curve. [3 points]
(c) Determine the velocity (m/s) at t = 8 seconds. [3 points]

4. A ball is thrown upward from the top of a tower with unknown height “h”. If it requires 20 seconds for the
stone to reach the ground with final velocity twice its initial velocity:

(a) Determine its initial velocity in m/s. [3 points]

(b) Determine the height “h” of the tower in meters. [3 points]
(c) Determine the maximum height (m) reached by the stone measured from the ground. [3 points]
