WESTERN CLASSICAL PLAYS and OPERA

ACTIVITY 1: Identify Theatrical Forms and their


Periods
Directions: Identify the different theatrical forms and their periods.

PERIODS THEATRICAL FORMS

1.Greek Theater (around 700 BC) Festivals honoring their God

2. Roman theater (3rd century BC.) Street theatre, acrobatics, the staging of comedies of
Plautus, and the high-verbally elaborate tragedies of Seneca

3. Medieval Theater (500 C.E.-1400) portrayal of the devil and hell

4. Renaissance Theater (1400-1600) formed a part of religious festivals

5. Baroque Theater (1600-1750) use of technology in current Broadways or commercial


plays

6. Neoclassical Theater (1800-1900) to entertain and to teach lessons

7. Romantic Theater (1800-2000) an art form in which singers and musicians perform a
dramatic work combining text and musical score.

Process Questions:
1. Is there an improvement on the theatrical forms and their evolution?
Explain. Yes, there is an improvement in their themes and their use of
technology. A pattern of growth evolved, with variations in each nation but
the common element of a need for realism on stage, which meant a true
depiction of the rising class's life-style and intimate surroundings in both
melancholy and humorous aspects.
2. How are you going to compare the theatre on each period to the present?
Explain your answer. Classical theatres were mostly focused on religious
settings. Yet, today's theater is a mix of reality and music, with a greater
emphasis on coarse, complicated acting.

ACTIVITY 3: COMPARISON AND DIFFERENTIATION


INSTRUCTIONS

Directions:
1. List down some famous plays and operas in the Philippines that you think
has Western theater art influence.
2. Write some remarks on the given plays or operas.

same concept which refers to the colonial period, and they also have the same
advocacy which is to remind their viewers about our historical experience and
heroism
Activity 5: INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

Directions: Record yourself performing your created sound and rhythm


and send it via electronic means.

REFLECTION

1. What did you learn about Western Classical Plays and Opera? A
pattern of development emerged, with differences in each
country but a similar desire for realism on stage, which meant a
genuine representation of the rising class's life-style and personal
surroundings in both gloomy and funny aspects.
2. How do you find your different activities especially on Activities 4
and 5? It was a little nerve-wracking for me since I'm not a
vocalist and singing an opera wasn't my thing. Yes, I'm interested
in these types of music, but I've never envisioned myself
performing them.
3. What skills did you develop? Skill that I developed while doing
this activity is creativity on how I did my accompaniment with the
use of materials that can be found in households and in looking
for a tone in performing the given song
