Architecture of Enterprise Systems

▪ It refers to the technical structure of the software:

▪ the ways users interact with the software
▪ the ways software is physically managed on computer hardware

Two Types of Architecture:

1. Client-Server Architecture
2. Service-Oriented Architecture

6
1. (Three-Tier) Client-Server Architecture

Three Layers or Components:

▪ How you interact with application
(using menus, typing, and selecting) –
presentation layer
▪ What the application allows you to do
(e.g., create formulas or charts,
compose an essay) – application layer
▪ Where the application stores your work
(on your hard drive or flash drive) –
data layer

2. Service-Oriented Architecture

▪ Web Services
▪ Used to expose enterprise system (and other system) functionality
▪ Standard interface – input and output
▪ Composite Applications
▪ Connect multiple applications via Web Services
▪ Build new capabilities without changing the underlying applications
▪ Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA): Web-enabled three-tier applications
which integrate many different client-server systems together as a technology

What is ERP System?

▪ ERP Systems are the world’s largest and most complex enterprise systems that
focuses primary on internal operations of an organization and integrate functional
and cross-functional business processes
▪ For example, SAP is a fully integrated global ERP system which could
manage end-to-end processes for companies which supports multiple
languages and currencies

▪ According to Gartner, “Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is defined as the

ability to deliver an integrated suite of business applications. ERP tools share a
common process and data model, covering broad and deep operational end-to-end
processes, such as those found in finance, HR, distribution, manufacturing, service
and the supply chain.”
