Welcome to the CPR/AED/FIRST AID program for the Classroom through the American Red
Cross. Are you seriously interested in learning and practicing lifesaving techniques? Due to the
considerable nature of this course, maturity, sincere interest, and cooperation are demanded.
Purpose The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program helps participants recognize and
respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in this program
teach the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and to
decide whether advanced medical care is needed. This program offers a choice of first aid, CPR and
AED courses to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience.
First Aid is the immediate, temporary care given to a victim before professional help arrives.
It is important to recognize and respond to an emergency. This course will help you feel more
confident in your ability to act appropriately in the event of an emergency.
There are two main objectives for this course. The first objective is the Course Requirements
and your grade. The second objective is the American Red Cross Requirements for certification. It is
important to understand that a student may pass the course requirements, but yet not satisfactorily
complete the American Red Cross requirements for certification. The opposite, although not
common, may also happen. Listed below are course objectives and course requirements for First Aid
and CPR candidates.

Course Requirements:
I will provide you with a calendar that will inform you of the activities, homework assignments
and tests scheduled for the classroom. (This calendar will also be posted in the classroom as well as
my Edline page.) While in the classroom we will review the ARC Book, participate in activities and
skills and also have written work as well as evaluations covering the material taught in class. If you
miss any days please remember you are responsible for making up the content/skills.
There will be two main projects within this course in addition to class work and tests. The
first project will be a First Aid Kit due during the first 9-week grading period. The second will be a
First Aid Presentation and research during the second 9-week grading period.
The grading scale is as follows: (Butler Area School District)
90 – 100 A
80 – 89 B
70 – 79 C
60 – 69 D
In addition to the competency requirements you will also be required to take precautions
regarding disease transmission prevention. Since we will be working with mannequins you should
take extra safety measures.
Do not eat, drink, chew gum or use tobacco products during classes
Request a separate mannequin if you have a cold, sore throat, cuts or sores around your
mouth or any other infectious disease
Use the breathing barrier (face shield) and gloves provided in class
Clean mannequin properly after each use
If these guidelines are followed, the risk of disease transmission during training is extremely low!
If you adhere to all these procedures, you will have a good experience in class and earn some
certifications. If you have any questions you may email me through the school at
dacia_cavaliero@butler.k12.pa.us. You may also contact me through phone mail at (724) 214-3200
X5235. I also try to keep my Edline current with test dates. Please share this information with your
parents or guardians and return the bottom portion of this page completed.
I have read both course requirements and the American Red Cross standards. I understand
that certification is not automatic but dependant on fulfilling all the American Red Cross
Requirements.
