1. Using a world and Philippine map, trace the route of the Magellan expedition (in
words)
- On August 10, 1519, Ferdinand Magellan left Seville, Spain for an expedition. He
brought along 270 crew members and five ships: the Victoria, San Antonio, Trinidad,
Concepcion, and Santiago. The ships reached West Africa before crossing the
Atlantic Ocean. They also reached Brazil and the South America. On October 21,
1520, Magellan discovered a passage which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean.
The passage is now known as the Strait of Magellan. The travel through the Pacific
was dreadful, since the crew ran out of food to eat. They arrived in Guam on March 6,
1521. Magellan finally arrived in the Philippines, specifically in Samar on March 16,
1521. They then went to Homonhon in Eastern Samar, and Masao in Butuan. On
April 7, 1521, the crew sailed to Cebu where they met Rajah Humabon. After making
pacts and fighting Lapu-Lapu in Mactan, the remaining members left the place to
return home. They were able to come across Palawan, Brunei, Mindanao and
Moluccas.
3. Analyze the content of Fray de Plasencia‘s account. Focusing on the relation on the
worship and beliefs of the Tagalogs, does the language or description used in the
account suggest bias of any sort? In terms of biases, what makes Morga‘s Sucesos de
las Islas Filipinas different from that of Fray Plasencia?
- In de Plasencia's account, numerous parts of the work are problematic and appear to
serve the colonists' interests, along with the author speculating on the Filipinos to
justify the allegiance of the Spaniards. His narration of the Tagalog's beliefs and
traditions were of a mocking and degrading tone, referring to their government and
cultures such as marriage dowry, worship of deities, and divorce as devil-ish, which
comes from his Christian beliefs. The events accounted by de Plasencia were
distorted or were seen as an offense to Christianity. Whereas, Morga's Sucesos de las
Islas Filipinas showed the events in a just and impartial light, and it also gave more
information than Fray de Plasencia's work. Morga was not an avid Christian, so his
religion made no impact in his narration of the events, although it showed his
prejudices about the domination of the Spaniards over the Filipinos.
4. Write a reflection paper on the relevance of the Kartilya ng Katipunan towards the
realization of the nation‘s independence. Your answer should be stated in three
paragraphs of not less than three but not more than five sentences per paragraph.
- The Kartilya ng Katipunan has influenced the Katipuneros as a "law" which they have
to abide to. This book was believed to be used as a guide up to the revolution in
opposition to the United States. Kartiluya ng Katipunan contained teachings and also
oaths and orders to live by, and shows how the Katipuneros used to think during the
Spanish revolution. The book gave prominence to patriotism and the main goal of
fighting against oppression, and also became a mind-changer to anyone who read it.
The book contains many teachings that are still valuable and relevant to this day, and
this is not just an ordinary artifact from the past. Kartilya teaches us that despite all
our dissimilarities and possessions, we are all the same and deserve the same rights,
be it men or women. It also teaches and encourages us to stand up against abuse and
oppression and fight for our freedom. It also emphasized that a revolution is not a
one-man fight, and that the battle for freedom of the Filipinos can be won by unity
and joining the revolution. The book tells the readers that the achievement of their
goal is not by just themselves fighting for what's right, it is a battle of all Filipinos.
The Kartilya ng Katipunan shows self-reflection and values as things that every
Katipunero must attain. The lines from the book, “Maitim man o maputi ang kulay ng
balat, lahat ng tao’y magkakapantay; mangyayaring angisa’y hihigitan sa dunong, sa
yaman, sa ganda, ngunit di mahihigitan sa pagkatao," shows that the color of our skin
does not matter, and that we all equal. We should focus on improving our selves, and
ignore the Western practices. The Filipino people should be proud of themselves and
their country Philippines, and so we need to fight for the Perlas ng Silangan.
