still captivating designers, and beads, sequins, and
sparkling yarns continue to make a big impact in the
fashion world. Whether you want just a hint of glamour
or a truly ornate look, embellished yarn is an easy way
to take your project to the next level. These gorgeous
yarns quickly add sparkle, shine, and pizzazz to even
the simplest sweater or accessory. Add a little holiday

A Beginner’s Guide to
Tunisian Crochet
Short Rows BY SHERYL THIES

The use of short rows is a technique that creates unique and

gentle curves and can slope an otherwise flat and straight edged
piece of Tunisian crochet fabric. Since the total number of stitches
is not altered, no stitches are added nor subtracted; the actual
width of the piece being worked is not changed, just the shape.

A short row is simply a row that is not worked completely

across; the remaining un-worked stitches are considered inactive
and wait until the next row to be re-activated and worked. Short
rows give a step-like appearance within the fabric being created.

A short row can be worked over any number of stitches and can
be worked from either the left or right edge of the piece. The
method for working the short row differs slightly depending on
which edge the short row is started.

Esmeralda’s Wrap, page 30

From the right edge:
Working a short row from the right edge is like
working any other row, only just working across
part of the row, not the whole row. In the example
below there are a total of 12 sts on the swatch.
The first short row consists of working the forward
pass 5 stitches, with the loop at the beginning on
the hook; there are a total of 6 sts in the short row.
The standard return pass is worked to complete
the short row. The stitches to the left of the short
row are not worked, inactivated, and wait until a
subsequent row to be reactivated.

On the next forward pass, the stitches from the

short row are worked, as are the stitches to the
left of the short row, completing the entire row. A Right edge Short row. Notice
small hole develops at the point of the jog or the the jog or step like appearance
step of the short row and the remaining stitches of and un-worked stitches,
the row. Depending on the project this hole may be
desirable and a nice design element, but often the
preference is to minimize this hole.

Minimizing the hole

There are two easy ways of minimizing the hole
and both methods involve how the last stitch of the
short row is worked.

Slip stitch: Work the stitches normally up to the

last stitch of the short row. Slip this stitch on
to the hook without working the stitch, that is
insert the hook, behind the front vertical bar and
simply leave it on the hook. Continue working
completely across the row before beginning
the return pass. While minimizing the hole, this 2 Strands
worked
method creates an elongated stitch at the point
of the jog. This may or may not be a desirable
design element.

Two strand stitch: Work the forward pass Slip Stitch

normally across to the last stitch of the short
row. This is the last stitch of the short row and
can be thought of as a left edge stitch. Work this
stitch as the last stitch of the forward pass, that
Hole
is insert your hook behind the vertical bar and the
strand that lies right behind it, yarn over and pull
up a loop. Now, instead of beginning the return
pass, continue working the forward pass across
the row to the left edge of the fabric. Work the
return pass. This minimizes the hole and creates
a stitch that is the least noticeable.

28 Love of Crochet | Winter 2015 loveofcrochet.com

From the left edge
When working a short row from the left edge,
the forward pass is worked normally completely
across the pass and the return pass is worked
for the specified number of stitches. Then a new
forward pass is worked across to the left edge. In
this case the stitches from the previous forward
pass remain un-worked, inactivated, waiting on
the hook.

As with right side short rows, on subsequent

rows, a small hole appears over the jog. This
hole can be minimized when working the next
complete forward pass. Work normally across
to one stitch before jog of the short row, slip
this stitch by inserting the hook behind the
front vertical bar and leaving it on the hook Left edge short row. Notice the jog or step like
before completing the forward pass across the appearance and un-worked stitches on hook.
remaining stitches. This creates an elongated
stitch and minimizes the hole.

Any stitch can be used for sort rows and often a

stitch different from the stitches used for the rest
of the piece may be preferred to maximize the
visual impact of the short rows. The shawl in this
issue utilizes short rows to create a ruffle along
one edge. To give the ruffle more volume, the
short rows are worked using an extended stitch,
while the regular rows are worked in Tss over the
ruffle area and then in a pattern stitch.

slopes and curves that can be created.

Easy Ribbed Bag KKKK Skill Level

Be the first to show off your talent for “knitting” a project with a Knook
hook, a special crochet hook with a hole near the bottom for a cable
cord. The small size of this project makes it a wonderful way to master
this easy technique. Quickly create this fun ribbed bag, add decorative
handles and a lining by hand or with a sewing machine, and you have a
bag perfect for your next outing.

Textures
Nothing makes handmade pieces feel warmer than texture, and
it's a great way to showcase the stitches rather than letting the
yarn do all the work! Here are three easy to work patterns that
will add depth to even the most basic crochet project.
By Amy Polcyn

Textured Picots
Rather than being worked around
the edge, this pattern uses picot
stitches throughout the body of
the fabric, giving the appearance of
bobbles without the work.

Special abbreviation
Picot sc: *Insert hook in indicated
st, yo, pull up a loop, [yo and draw

Two in One
This pattern is deceptively simple—
alternating 2 single crochets worked
in the same stitch with skipped
stitches. Perfect for beginners!

(Multiple of 2+3 for beg chain)
Row 1: Skip 2 ch (counts as sc), sc

Cobblestones
Combine half double crochet and
slip stitches to form this texture.
The slipped stitches slant, giving
an interesting effect to the finished
fabric.
