Artwork: The Chronicles of Narnia

By: C.S Lewis

Produced By: Mark Johnson, Philip Steuer, Andrew Adamson

The Chronicles of Narnia series of films is based on The Chronicles of Narnia, a series of
novels by C. S. Lewis. From the seven books, three were adapted. The Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008), and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)—which
collectively grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide. The series revolves around the adventures of
children in the world of Narnia, guided by Aslan, a wise and powerful lion that can speak and is
the true king of Narnia. The children heavily featured in the films are the Pevensie siblings, and a
prominent antagonist is the White Witch (also known as Queen Jadis). The first two films were
directed by Andrew Adamson and the third film was directed by Michael Apted. A fourth film
was to be directed by Joe Johnston, but it was announced in 2018 that new adaptations of the
series would be made for Netflix.

Narnia is a fantasy world as the primary location for his series of seven fantasy novels for
children. In Narnia, some animals can talk, mythical beasts abound, and magic is common. The
series tracks the story of Narnia when humans, usually children, enter the Narnian world from
"our world", or Earth. The Chronicles of Narnia are classics of children’s and fantasy fiction
with a strong and enduring following. Its clever fusion of Christian, Pagan and Classical
elements, with easy storytelling, magic and talking animals, make it easy to enjoy.

The Chronicles of Narnia, with their typical suspense music and dialogues kill the beautiful
world created by C. S. Lewis in the books. The books are not only about stories but also about a
whole new level of imagination. In the movies, you’ll see actors, animated characters and
shooting spots all found on earth, but in the books you’ll go to Narnia, explore the world and
meet people in person.

Artwork: The lord of the rings

By: J.R.R Tolkien

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien tells the story of the War of the Ring in the fictional
world of Middle-earth. The long novel, commonly published as three volumes and mistakenly
called a trilogy, centers around the magical One Ring, which was discovered by Bilbo Baggins
in the earlier novel The Hobbit. Now, the free peoples of Middle-earth, such as Men, Elves,
Dwarves, and Hobbits, must overcome the dark power of Sauron by destroying the Ring.

The lord of the rings made of enormous cultural touchstone that made one’s geeky hobbies
socially acceptable; even desired. In a time when we’re obsessed with super-connected cinematic
universes, Jackson’s Lord of the Rings are the perfect reminder that however hard we try, these
stories can’t be engineered, and that sometimes, the experience is just magical.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is absolutely worth reading, even though they’re very long and
a bit monotonous.  There’s so much to the story that doesn’t make it into movies, side stories and
fascinating tidbits that you miss if you don’t take the plunge. I have to admit that for all I love
fantasy – for all I love epic fantasy.

Artwork: Because I could not stop for Death

By: Emily Dickinson

"Because I could not stop for death" is one of Emily Dickinson's most celebrated poems and was
composed around 1863. In the poem, a female speaker tells the story of how she was visited by
"Death" personified as a "kindly" gentleman and taken for a ride in his carriage. This ride
appears to take the speaker past symbols of the different stages of life, before coming to a halt at
what is most likely her own grave indeed, it seems she herself is already dead. Much of the
poem's power comes from its refusal to offer easy or simplistic answers to life's greatest mystery
what happens when people die and the poem can be read both as the anticipation of a heavenly
Christian afterlife and as something altogether more bleak and down-to-earth.

One of the most famous poems ever written is Emily Dickinson’s Because I Could Not Stop For
Death. Written around 1862, Because I Could Not Stop For Death is considered Emily
Dickinson’s best work. The obvious meaning of the poem would be the journey to death from
the perspective of the afterlife. Death is personified as a kind gentleman who takes the narrator in
a carriage to her grave. The poem is being narrated from the afterlife seeing that the narrator is
reflecting on the event that brought her to where she is now.

This poem has a strong meaning and a poignant story. This story will awaken your senses and
make you feel grateful for living on Earth.

Artwork: Cancer

By: Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way has defended the track ’Cancer’, which is included
on their forthcoming album ’The Black Parade’.

This song is about a patient who is dying of cancer, and it is told from his perspective. The
patient in the song is in terrible pain, but his primary concern is how much it hurts to leave
behind his loved ones. The lyrics describe symptoms that are typical of a cancer patient, such as
hair loss, chapped lips and grogginess that all result from chemotherapy treatment.
I absolutely love this song, it makes me cry. Personally, no one around me has suffered with
cancer, but it’s still really sad. The song is just so meaningful and touches the hearts of anyone
that listens to it.

Artwork: Baro't Saya

The national costume of the Philippines

The national costume of the Philippines, the baro’t saya, is an elegant hybrid of Filipino and
Spanish clothing styles. The term itself comes from the Tagalong words "barot at saya" or
"blouse and skirt," still the basic components of the ensemble. Baro't saya is an ensemble that
traditionally consists of four parts: the blouse (baro or camisa), a long skirt (saya or falda), a
kerchief worn over the shoulders (pañuelo, fichu, or alampay), and a short rectangular cloth worn
over the skirt (the tapis or patadyong).

Made of pineapple cloth, the indigenous textile of the Philippine Islands, the silhouette of the
garment relates to traditional Spanish costume, particularly in the cut of the sleeves, the shawl
collar and trailing skirt. During the period of Spanish colonization, the baro't saya was the
everyday dress of most Philippine women. Although everyday ensembles were far less ornate,
the blouse component was usually more decorative than the skirt. Slight differences in the
decoration or style of wearing the baro’t saya provided a means of distinguishing members of
various social strata.

Baro't Saya it is an elegant hybrid costume style in the philippines. Historically, psychologically,
and spiritually true. The overpowering and indomitable spirit of the Filipinos as a people is
reflected distinctly by this expose’. The Pina and Jusi fabrics were born partly by restriction, as
well as the artistic inventive ingenuity of Filipino artisans, whose natural gift for art gave way to
make something exquisitely beautiful from something nobody ever thought could yield such
splendorous fabric that challenged the elegance of silk. This material rendered classic elegance to
the “Barong Tagalog, “ the national attire for the Filipino male. The “Barong” actually connotes,
“the gentleman,” symbolizing nobility and dignity that the foreign invader attempted to strip
away from “Indios.”

ACTIVITY 3 : Choose an artwork and explore the process of what materials and techniques
were used.

Mona Lisa, also called Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, Italian
La Gioconda, or French La Joconde, oil painting on a poplar wood panel by Leonardo Da
Vinci, probably the world’s most famous painting.

The Mona Lisa is an oil painting, with a cottonwood panel as the surface. It is unusual in that
most paintings are commissioned as oil on canvas, but the cottonwood panel is part of what has
attributed to the fame of the painting. Because of the medium used for the image, the Mona Lisa
has survived for six centuries without ever having been restored–a trait very unusual when
considering the time period of the piece.

Mona Lisa stands out amongst the great paintings for the detail in her hands, eyes, and lips. Da
Vinci used a shadowing technique at the corners of her lips as well as the corners of her eyes
which give her an extremely lifelike appearance and look of amusement. Her portrait is such that
to an observer, they are standing right before Lisa Del Giocondo, with the arms of her chair as
the barrier between the observer and the subject of the painting. Da Vinci also created a
background with aerial views and a beautiful landscape, but muted from the vibrant lightness of
the subject’s face and hands. The technique Da Vinci used in executing the painting left behind
no visible brush marks, something that was said to make any master painter lose heart. It is truly
a masterpiece.

2.Does art always have a function? Why? Provide your own example.

- Arts always have a function but they cannot be assigned since the function of an art form
depends on its context. The function of arts usually varies based on how they have been
perceived by the one viewing them. However, the easiest way to identify its function is to know
who the artist was and what genre does it belong. Functions of an art can be can categorized into:
personal, physical, or social. The physical functions are often the easiest to understand.
Architecture, crafts, and industrial designs are forms of art that serves physical function. Art that
depicts social conditions are the one performing social functions also the personal function of
the art is the most difficult to discuss. when art serves as therapy for both the artist and the
viewer then that is serving the personal function art.
