Luthfan Nur Rochman

Luthfan Nur Rochman is a filmmaker, curator, and artist who is working with various medium, such as
pencil, oil pastel, celluloid films, aside from digital video. He is also an active member of Forum Lenteng
and organizer of ARKIPEL – Jakarta Documentary & Experimental Film Festival since 2018. Currently
he is focusing his activity mostly in Milisifilem; a group study of film production through the practice
of visual experimentation initiated by Forum Lenteng. He is also part of Lab Laba-laba, an art collective
who uses celulloid film as their medium. Aside of active in Forum Lenteng, he also works as freelance
research assistant for archaeological research, frequently for University of Indonesia.
With a background in archaeology, his work often revolves around dissecting the layered history of
various cultural occurrences. Recently, Luthfan wrote a piece on the monography of 1953’s Indonesian
film, Harimau Tjampa, in which he wrote the genealogy of the terms Harimau (Tiger) and Tjampa (a
Southeast Asia ethnic group) using the sociocultural phenomenon that happened in the region of
Southeast Asia since the era of Indianization. Luthfan also curated Otty Widasari’s solo exhibition:
PARTISAN, where he saw Otty’s artistic practice as a provocation towards established monolithic
monuments she encountered in the locus of her works, be it the physical location, the official
historiography, and virtual space, using the performativity of media technology and young people who
are closely working with her.
He is currently developing Candikala program at Forum Lenteng, which is trying to recontextualize

Hindu-Buddhist heritage in Indonesia by the practice of art. In which, Luthfan applies the development
of archaeological self-criticism towards its means of cultural and knowledge production to the grand
narrative that is established in Indonesian Classical Era and direct it towards creative imagining of the
now blended past glory and failure, present shards, and future speculation.
