2022 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination

Results Released

Results notices of the 2022 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination
(HKDSE) will be issued tomorrow (20 July) by the Hong Kong Examinations and
Assessment Authority (HKEAA).

This year, a total of 42,328 school candidates and 5,563 private candidates sat the HKDSE.
About 90% of the candidates from 427 day schools registered for two to three elective
subjects in addition to the four core subjects, namely Chinese Language, English Language,
Mathematics and Liberal Studies.

Professor Wei Xiang-dong, Secretary General of the HKEAA, thanked various sectors for
their support for the HKDSE, ‘For the third consecutive year the HKDSE was conducted
under the pandemic, which was more severe this year than in the past. Once again, I would
like to express my gratitude to participating schools, examination personnel, candidates, the
Education Bureau (EDB) and relevant government departments for their full support and
collaboration.’ He also encouraged the candidates, saying, ‘Completing the senior
secondary curriculum and taking the HKDSE under the pandemic required unparalleled
perseverance and persistence. I am proud of all of you. The HKDSE is just a stage in life,
and as long as you move forward with confidence and hope, you will be able to create a
bright future.’

As regards the performance of the candidates, a total of 28,740 day school candidates
obtained level 2 or above in five subjects, including Chinese Language and English
Language. This represents 71.3% of day school candidates, which is 1.1% lower than that
of last year. These candidates are eligible to apply for local sub-degree programmes and
relevant civil service posts.

The percentage of day school candidates who have met the general entrance requirements
for local undergraduate degree programmes is 42.1%, which is comparable to last year.
These 17,336 day school candidates obtained level 3 or above in both Chinese Language
and English Language, and level 2 or above in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal
Studies.

This year, 87.8% of day school candidates attained level 2 or above and 59.7% attained
level 3 or above in Chinese Language, while 9.6% were awarded level 5 or above, which
are slightly lower than those of last year.

In English Language, 79.1% and 53.2% of day school candidates obtained level 2 or above
and level 3 or above respectively, which are 1.3% and 1.0% lower than last year. 10.5% of
school candidates achieved level 5 or above, representing an increase of 0.9% as compared
to last year.

In Mathematics Compulsory Part, 82.2% of day school candidates attained level 2 or above,
while 14.5% achieved level 5 or above, which are comparable to the results of last year.

The performance of candidates in Liberal Studies is comparable to last year, with 89.8% of
day school candidates obtaining level 2 or above and 9.6% achieving level 5 or above.

In addition to the 24 Category A subjects, the HKDSE also offers 41 Category B Applied
Learning subjects and six Category C Other Language subjects this year.

Candidates who took Category B Applied Learning subjects (excluding Applied Learning
Chinese) achieved ‘Attained’ or above in 92.4% of the 3,229 subjects assessed, which is
1.1% lower than last year. Among these subjects, 29% were awarded ‘Attained with
Distinction (I)’ or above, while 9.2% were awarded ‘Attained with Distinction (II), both
showing increases from last year’s figures.

A total of 492 candidates sat Category C Other Language subjects this year. These subjects
were examined using the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level question papers from Cambridge
Assessment International Education. Results of the November 2021 series examinations
were released in mid-January 2022, with 93.9% and 63.4% of candidates attaining grade e
or above and grade a respectively.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic situation, a series of precautionary measures were

implemented in around 520 halls and about 400 classrooms that were used as examination
centres this year, to safeguard the health of candidates and examination personnel. More
than 11,300 hall invigilator-sessions were organised for the written and listening papers.

With the coordination and support of the EDB and various government departments, the
HKEAA conducted the HKDSE at the Penny’s Bay Community Isolation Facility again this
year for 18 candidates undergoing quarantine and 26 candidates confirmed with COVID-19,
and also supported the government’s priority compulsory testing arrangements for
candidates, examination personnel and their household members living in the ‘restricted
area’. For the 2022 HKDSE, the HKEAA received applications for assessed results from 170
candidates who were absent from the examinations due to illness and other reasons.
In the 2022 HKDSE, 3,218 candidates with special educational needs (SEN) were provided
with special examination arrangements in written examinations, which has increased by over
7% from 2021, and over 770 special examination centres were set up for these candidates.

This year, 12 assessment centres were set up throughout the territory and about 4,200
markers and about 400 marking assistants were appointed to mark approximately 661,000
answer scripts.

Arrangements for the release of results on 20 July

School candidates should collect their results notices according to the arrangement of
respective schools, while an online results enquiry service is available to evening school
candidates from 7:00am on 20 July.

Private candidates can check their results online from 7:00am on 20 July. Those who do not
receive their results notices by 20 July should contact the HKEAA on 3628 8860 or visit our
office located at 12/F, Southorn Centre, 130 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai between 8:30am
and 5:30pm on 21 July.

This year, the HKEAA will continue to release the HKDSE results via Short Message Service
(SMS) in addition to the results notices. The SMS showing individual candidates’ results will
be sent to those who have provided their SMS phone numbers to the HKEAA starting from
9:00am on 20 July.

Service hours of the Public Examinations Information Centre (PEIC) and the enquiry counter
in our Southorn Centre office will be extended on 20 July to provide support for candidates
and schools.

Notes for Editors:

⚫ The general entrance requirements for local sub-degree programmes are five
subjects at level 2 or above (including Chinese Language and English Language) in the
HKDSE or equivalent.
⚫ The general entrance requirements for local undergraduate degree programmes of
local universities/tertiary institutions are level 3 or above in Chinese Language and
English Language, and level 2 or above in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal
 Studies. Apart from the four core subjects, institutions also set other admission
requirements.
