101 Things I Learned in Architecture School (100)

Matthew Frederick
Motivational letter
“Women are always told, ‘You’re not going to make it, it’s too difficult, you can’t do that, don’t enter this
competition, you’ll never win it,’ – they need confidence in themselves and people around them to help
them to get on.”
— Zaha Hadid
I don’t think that architecture is only about shelter, is only about a very simple enclosure. It should be able
to excite you, to calm you, to make you think.
— Zaha Hadid
My name is Rehema Yusuf, I am a 23 years old graduated Architect. From my upbringing peoples even if
my families and around say that “why you focused in numbers instead you have to read biology and
chemistry parts”, even though I reads them I was more interested in the numerical parts: physics and
Mathematics. And also, they say “these engineering things are not for women’s; there is site works and
else females are weak for that; you have to go to health parts like medicine, nursing pharmacy and so on”.
Even though I am tough in all subjects, this perspective of peoples bothered me a lot and I, with the help
of God comes to the recent way of my life. I didn’t hear them. It was not easy but I did it, thanks to God.
In my entrance to the university my Grade in my country scale was vary very good and also, I became an
Architect with a good academic performance, internship practice and Architectural extracurricular
activities also.

German- I have 2 certificates in private school for AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit. I also work as a
site supervisor, Graphics and Interior designer. All of these is during my educational stay in
Hawassa University for my Batchelor degree in Architecture. These shows that I almost didn’t
sleep; always enjoy the feeling of working hard specially to build myself: - to be skilled and to
gain knowledge.
I am choosing German for my master’s study because of it is more of educational space and it
will help me to be more skilled and well-educated person, I believe on that.
Architecture: - mostly peoples are taking it as a business income developer only. I want to go
further in an educational stuff of it just like Architect Zaha Hadid; She was in an educational sector
until her age of 40. I believe that knowing more and more will leads to some thing excellent in all
sectors. And also, I want to share this knowledge to do something more excellent.
Culture- I like everything about identity, from where we come, how we are living and so on. In
my interior works there is some thing about culture even if they are modern. Districts and
buildings in Germany have their own history and it is more of historical; I want to combine
Ethiopian culture with Germany to design something hilarious.
German language- German Deutsch is a pretty language that is spoken across the globe. Immersing in
the German culture and interacting with inhabitants will make it easier to speak German Deutsch fluently,
giving me an Upper hand.
In General, by gating this scholar ship I want to make some thing different and help peoples.

With regards!
