ADVANTAGES?
Extreme high Corrosion Protection (600-2000hurs salt spray test), zinc flake coatings have been
used in the automotive industry, among others, but the strengths of this coating are also
increasingly being used for construction machines and in the field of renewable energy.
An overview of the main advantages of zinc flake coatings:
Cathodic protection: The zinc flake coating functions as a metallic layer consisting of many
small flakes. In most cases they consist of a combination of zinc and aluminium flakes bound
together through an inorganic matrix. Since the sacrificial effect of zinc actively protects the
component from environmental and chemical influences, the zinc flake coating offers a high
level of cathodic protection.
Low layer thickness: The total layer thickness of the coating is on average only 8-20 µm and is
therefore thinner than a human hair. Compared to other corrosion protection systems such as
powder coatings or hot-dip galvanizing, the zinc flake coating is almost invisible, but
nevertheless achieves a protective effect of over 1,000 hours against base metal corrosion in
the neutral salt spray test in accordance with ISO 9227.
High accuracy of fit: Reliable corrosion protection with a very thin texture: Zinc flake systems
are ideal for components whose standards place high demands on fitting accuracy, for example,
screws with metric threads.
No stress corrosion cracking: With zinc flake coating, no hydrogen is provided during the
application process, which prevents application-related, hydrogen-induced stress corrosion
cracking. Zinc flake systems are therefore the best choice for high-strength steels (Classes 10.9
and higher).
Attractive appearance: It is possible to adapt the visual appearance of the zinc flake coating to
customer requirements through the selection of the topcoat. By overpainting with a paint that
does not damage the corrosion protection of the zinc flakes, different colour variations are also
possible, for example, for marking different components.

AUTOMOTIVE
The automobile markets are subjected to greater cost pressures than ever before. At
the same time, all of the vehicle parts utilised need to satisfy very high safety
requirements and be available worldwide at the highest quality, at any time. Against this
background, corrosion protection for the parts fitted to vehicles plays a key role. From
bolts to chassis components and on to engine mounts: each individual component
requires a special coating precisely tailored to the requirements in order to satisfy the
strict automobile specifications of the national and international OEMs.
CONSTRUCTION
As a versatile material with many uses, steel is widely used in the construction industry.
Special coating measures are required if steel components, connecting elements and
large surfaces are to be given long-term protection in the atmosphere, earth or water
against corrosion damage, thus increasing longevity. Tailored to the respective
designated use, these are defined in DIN EN ISO 12944. Whilst corrosion category C4
is required for industrial fields and coastal areas with moderate salt exposure, offshore
areas require the C5-M class.
CONSTRUCTION MACHINES
Whether it is cranes, forklifts and conveying vehicles, road buildings or mining
machines: construction machines and tools used in the construction area are exposed
to constantly changing environmental conditions and need to withstand often extreme
chemical and mechanical stresses. The requirements for the optimal coating system for
the parts and components are correspondingly high. A high-performance corrosion
protection solution ensures enduring functionality and helps preserve the optical
appearance of the valuable capital goods.
AGRICULTURAL
Equipment, machines and buildings used in the agricultural sector are subjected to
different stresses – and this also applies for the construction parts and components that
they contain. For example, machine components must be able to withstand constant
environmental influences, retain long-term functional ability and also keep their original
appearance. As a consequence, consistently effective corrosion protection is essential.
In addition, resistance to mechanical stress must also be taken into account.
Components in silos and livestock pens are also required to withstand chemical attack –
such as cleaning agents or ammonia.
