CORE ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

Piston Crown
• The casting is not visibly cracked, broken, or have severe

• It is not a genuine Caterpillar Motoren Engine part or not
an acceptable part number.

• There is any evidence of unsuccessful attempts to sal-


vage, including milling or grinding.

• There is fire damage.

INSPECTION TIPS

Visual inspection

• Only a visual inspection of the Piston Crown is needed.

• For all Crowns the use of a hoist or other lifting device is suggested to in-
spect all necessary surfaces.

• It is not necessary to disassemble, dye check, or magnaflux Piston Crown


cores

• The Piston Crown need not be cleaned, but removal of excessive oil, dirt,
carbon and gasket material by scraper or emery cloth may be necessary
to correctly assess the condition of the core.

• Milling or grinding will be viewed as an attempt to salvage and result in

• The use of a mechanical device to aid in the cleaning or removal of gas-


ket material is not recommended.

• To differentiate between the two suppliers inspection of the inner bearing


surface is required.
o Mahle can be identified as having a plain bearing surface
o Kolbenschmidt can be identified as having a recessed Bearing
surface
(See figs 1 and 2)

o Admissible wear of Ring Grooves is as defined in the Engineer’s


Handbook

• The criteria listed below can be assumed to be identical across all plat-
forms
