Information about “To Be”
The verb "be" is irregular in the Simple Present. It also has different question forms and negative forms.

Positive Negative Question

 He is.  He is not.  Is he?

Look at these examples with the main verb like:

3. Write the correct form of the verb in the boxes below. Present Simple Tense

Present Simple Negative


The present simple negative is don’t/ doesn’t + verb

 I drink coffee but I don’t drink tea.


 Sue drinks tea but she doesn’t drink coffee.
 You don’t work very hard.
 We don’t watch television very often.

Remember:

5. Write question. Use the word in brackets + do/ does. Put the words in the right order.

7. Complete the sentence. All of them are negative. Use don’t / doesn’t + one of these verbs:

 I buy a newspaper every day but sometimes ____I don’t read___ it.
 Paul has a car but he doesn't wear it very often.
 They like films but they don’t go to the cinema very often.
 Amanda is married but she doesn´t use a ring.

 It’s not an expensive hotel. It doesn´t cost much to stay there.
 Brian lives near us but we don’t see him very often.

8. Put the verb into the correct form. Positive or negative.

 Margaret speaks four languages. (to speak)
