Bhogan thar or Bhogar, the J na

Guru of Babaji, in the poem Bhogar J na Sagarama (Bhogar Oceanic s Life Story, consisting of 557 verses, verse number 2, lines number 3 and 4), identifies himself as a Tamilian, (Ramaiah, 1979; 1982. p. 17).[1] In the same verse he states that the great Siddha K langi N thar initiated him in J na Yoga (supreme selfknow ledge). K langi N thar w as born in Kai (Benares). H e attained the immortal state of swarpa sam at the ago of dhi 315, and then made China the center of his teaching activities. H e belonged to the ancient tradition of N ava (nine) N th sadhus (holy ascetics), tracing their tradition to Lord Shiva. There are nine important shrines associated w ith this tradition, five of w hich are in the H im laya M ountains: A marn (w here Shiva th first taught Kriya Yoga to his Shakti partner, Parvati Devi), Kedarn th, Badrin th (India), Kail san th, (Tibet) and Paupatin (N epal). th M eanw hile, Bhogan thar practiced Kundalini Yoga in four stages. The first three stages arc described in a later chapter on The Psychophysiology of Kriya Kundalini Pranayama . Bhogan thar chose the Palani M alai (mountain) in w hat is

H e attained swarpa sam dhi at Palani, through the grace of Lord M uruga, or the eternal youth, Kum Sw . The ra mi Kum rasw mi temple at Palani became the epicenter of his activities. H e visited many countries astrally, and physically and through transmigration. In one of his songs Bhogan thar claims to have flow n to China at one point in a sort of airplane w hich he built: he held discussions w ith Chinese Siddhas before returning to India Bhogar receiving instructions from his teacher, Klngi Nthar (Kailasapathy, 1969, p. 197-211). H is visit to South A merica has been confirmed by accounts left by the M uycas of Chile:
Bocha, w ho gave laws to M uycas, was a white, bearded man, wearing long robes, who regulated the calendar, established festivals, and vanished in time like others (other remarkable teachers who had come across the Pacific according to numerous legends of Incas, Aztecs and M ayans). (Lal 1965, p. 20).[2]

The idol had to be created from a substance that w ould last throughout Kali Yuga. The most resilient of know n substances, granite, w as know n to w ear and crack after thousands of such rituals. So Bhogan thar fashioned it out of nine secret herbal and chemical ingredients, nava pashanam, w hich made it harder than granite. Eight of the ingredients w ere combined in a mold of the idol. The ninth, w as added as a catalyst, to solidify it.

Thus its composition remains a mystery to date. The traces of the substance are contained in the ritual offerings in w hich it is bathed. When these are returned and consumed by the devotee, their spiritual progress is enhanced. A mission to China and transmigration K langi N thar decided to enter into sam dhi in seclusion for 3,000 years. H e summoned Bhogan thar telepathically from Tamil N adu to China to take over his mission. Bhogan thar traveled by sea, follow ing the trade route. In China, he w as instructed by K langi N thar in all aspects of the Siddha sciences. These included the preparation and use of the kaya kalpa herbal formulae to promote longevity. A fter K langi N thar entered into trance, Bhogan thar assumed his teaching mission to the Chinese. To facilitate this, he transmigrated his vital body into the physical body of a deceased Chinese man, and thereafter w ent by the name Bo-Yang . Bo is a derivation of the w ord Bhogam w hich means bliss, material and spiritual. This bliss, for w hich he w as named Bo-Yang is experienced w hen the Kundalini shakti, the feminine primordial yin energy aw akens, passes up to the crow n of the head, the seat of Shiva, the masculine yang pole, in the Sahasra cakra at the summit of the head and unites w ith it. Transformation of his physical body Bhogan thar decided to overcome the limitations of the Chinese body, w ith its degenerative tendencies, and prolong its life through the use of the kaya kalpa herbs long enough for the effect of Kriya Kundalini Pranayama and related yogic techniques to bring swarpa sam dhi. In his poem Bhogar J Sutra 8, verse number 4, he na describes vividly w hat happened after carefully preparing a tablet using thirty five different herbs: With great care and patience I made the (kaya kalpa) tablet and then sw allow ed it: N ot w aiting for fools and skeptics w ho w ould not appreciate its hidden meaning and importance. Steadily I lived in the land of the parangis (foreigners) For tw elve thousand years, my fellow ! I lived for a long time and fed on the vital ojas (sublimated spiritual energy) With the ojas vindhu I received the name, Bhogar: The body developed the golden color of the pill: N ow I am living in a w orld of gold (based upon translation by Yogi S.A .A . Ramaiah, 1979, p. 40-42). H e chose three of his best disciples and his faithful dog, and took thorn to the top of a mountain. A fter first offering a tablet to the dog, the dog immediately fell over dead. H e next offered it to his leading disciple, Yu, w ho also immediately fell over dead. A fter offering it to the tw o remaining disciples, w ho by this time w ere extremely nervous, and w ho promptly hid their tablets rather than sw allow them, Bhogan thar sw allow ed the remaining tablets and also fell over unconscious. Crying w ith grief, the tw o remaining disciples w ent dow n the mountain to get material to bury the bodies. When the disciples returned to the spot w here the bodies had been left lying, all that w as found w as a note, in Bhogan thar handw riting, w hich said: s The kaya kalpa tablets are w orking. A fter aw akening from their trance I restored faithful Yu and the dog. You have missed your chance for immortality. (Ibid.) This kaya kalpa enabled Bhogan thar to transform the Chinese body over a period of 12,000 years, during w hich time it developed a lustrous golden color. (The physiological transformation to the state of sw arpa sam dhi w as, how ever, completed only later, at Palani in the final phases of Kriya Kundalini Yoga and related practices. These phases w ill be described in chapter 11. Bhogan thar ow n graphic s description is recorded in the poem at the end of this chapter Initiation into Sam dhi.) In the fifth century B.C., Confucius met Lao-Tzu Bo-Yang and afterw ards said of him:

I know a bird can fly, a fish can sw im, and an animal can run. For that w hich runs, a net can be fashioned; for that w hich sw ims, a line can be strung. But the ascent of a Dragon on the w ind into heaven is something w hich is beyond my know ledge. Today I have met Lao-Tzu, w ho is perhaps like a Dragon. A mong the Chinese, particularly, the Taoists, the Dragon is the symbol of Kundalini Shakti, the primordial force. A t the end of his mission to China, about 400 BC, Bhogan thar, w ith his disciple Yu (w hom he also gave the Indian name Pulipani) and other close disciples, left China by the land route. A s recorded in the Taoist literature, at the request of the gatekeeper at the H an Ku mountain pass Lao-Tzu crystallized his teachings. H e did so in tw o books, the Tao Ching, w ith 37 verses, and the Te Ching w ith 42 verses (M acKintosh, 1971).[3] In book tw o he says Do good to him who has done you injury w hich w as also said by the , contemporary Tamil Siddha, Tiruvalluvar in his Tirukkural (Tiruvalluvar, 1968). Taoist yoga traditions continue to seek physical immortality using techniques remarkably similar to those taught in Tamil Shiva Yoga Siddh nta. Return to I ndia A long their w ay, they visited several shrines in the H imalayas and K marpa, the famous Tantric Shakti shrine in A ssam. [4] H e composed his greatest w ork of

Upon his return to Tamil N adu he introduced the Chinese salts and chemistry, w hich he called C nac ram and porcelain making. H e submitted his 7,000 verse manuscript for evaluation to his guru, A gastyar at Courtrallam and to an academy of siddhas there. It w as endorsed by all of them as a great w ork. Follow ing this, many siddhas, including Konkanavar, Karuvoorar, N andeesw ar, Kamala M uni, Satta M uni, M acchamuni, and Sundarandar became his disciples to study the sciences of kaya kalpa and yoga. H e eventually turned over his teaching mission to Pulipani. Establishes shrine at Katirkamam and attains swarpa samdhi A fter performing tapas at Sathura Giri, and Shiva Gin, he w ent to Katirkamam in Sri Lanka to perform tapas and w in the grace of Lord M uruga. Under inspiration from the Lord he established the famous Yantra shrine, representing the 1,008 petalled lotus cakra, w hich blossomed in Bhogar there. N ext he w ent to Palani w here he attained swarpa sam dhi. H e retired to Katirk mam, where Babaji N agaraj met him around 211 A D. Second M ission to China Later, after the period of the Six Dynasties (220 to 590 A D), Bhogan thar returned w ith some Tamil disciples to China. This w as done through his disciple Karuvoorar and another Tamil disciple w ho acted as intermediaries and through messages tied to the legs of courier birds, like today homing pigeons.
