1.
SCOPE
1.1. This specification defines the minimum requirements for construction, performance and features of the equipment listed in the accompanying data sheets. This specification applies to the following type of instrument. 1.2.1 Thermocouples.
1.2.
2.
PURPOSE
2.1. 2.2. 2.3 Thermocouple assemblies shall be supplied strictly in accordance with the data sheets enclosed. The notes section of each data sheet describes the additional features or deviations from standard for each specific device. Vendor in his offer shall separately list out all the deviations from the purchaser's specification.
3.
GENERAL
3.1. Tagging 3.1.1. A permanently attached (with drive pins or equal) stainless steel tag(s) stamped with the following information shall be provided on each thermocouple : Tag Number Manufacturer's Name or Trademark Thermocouple Type Thermowell Material 3.1.2. 3.1.3. Each individual carton or box shall be marked with the instrument tag number on the top and side of the carton. If individual cartons are grouped in a larger box for ease of shipment, then the larger box must be marked on the top with the tag numbers of all the instruments in the box.
3.2.
Packing 3.2.1. All ports and openings shall be sealed Threaded connections shall be protected with metallic or moulded plastic caps or lugs. It is the responsibility of the instrument vendor to ensure that the equipment is adequately protected and packed to meet the shipping and delivery requirements.
3.2.2.
3.3.
Vendor Responsibilities It is the responsibility of the vendor to verify the selection of the thermocouple type and materials of construction for each application based on the information provided on the data sheets.

CONSTRUCTION
4.1. Design 4.1.1. 4.1.2. Thermocouple assemblies shall consist of a thermocouple head, thermocouple element and a thermowell. Thermocouple wire, limits of error, colour code, material of construction and method of fabrication shall be in accordance with the IEC 584 Part I (1995), Part II (Amend. 1999).
4.2.
Thermocouple Head Assemblies 4.2.1. Thermocouple head material shall be Epoxy coated Aluminum , assemblies shall consist of a case, a screw-on cover with SS chain and a terminal block. The case shall be weather proof and corrosion resistant as per IP-65. The cover shall be attached to the case by means of chain. The case shall have 2 Nos. 1/2" NPT (F) electrical conduit connection and shall be connected to the thermowell by means of nipples and a union. One cable entry of the T.C. head assembly shall be plugged and other entry shall be provided with double compression W.P brass cable gland, suitable for T/C extension cable. 4.2.3. 4.2.4. The case shall be suitable for mounting terminal blocks for thermocouple elements. A terminal block with screw clamp terminals for the thermocouple wires shall be mounted in the case. The terminal block shall be readily removable from the case and shall be mounted so that it will allow for differences in the expansion rates of the inserts with the thermocouple wires. Terminal block shall be capable of accommodating extension wires upto 1.5mm2 (16 AWG). The polarity of the terminals shall be permanently and clearly identified. The cover chain material shall be corrosion resistant, preferably stainless steel. The thermocouple terminal block assembly shall be made of a moulded, high temperature, high dielectric material. Nipple-union-nipple type head extension to be provided. Material of construction for union and nipples shall be GI.
4.2.2.
4.3.
Thermocouple Element Assemblies 4.3.1. Thermocouple element assemblies shall be as specified on data sheets and size, wires and the necessary insulation for sheathed type will be in accordance with the IEC 584. All thermocouple assemblies shall be ungrounded junction type. The assembly shell have 6 mm dia and SS-321 or Inconel sheath material. High temperature limits, wire gauge and temperature range shall be appropriate for the specified type. Specially for this specification, wherever element is specified for temperature above 10000C, vendor shall use 14 AWG dia element wire and 8 mm dia element assembly with Inconel 600 sheath.
