8.2 Main Landing Gear Door

These doors enclose the wheel and strut bays. The main landing gear .doors"
consist of inboard wheel bay doors, which are hydraulically operated and
outboard strut bay doors, which are operated by the landing gears
themselves.

The inboard doors are hinged to the fuselage structure at their inboard
ends by means of piano-type hinges. They open downwards and inwards. An
uplock mechanism retains them in the closed pos'ition. Hydraulic actuators
serve to open and close the inboard doors.
The doors are only open during the extension and retraction cycle of the
landing gears. When the gears' are up or down, the doors are closed .•

Twobrackets located at the inboard end of every door are connected to the
actuators. Another bracket is fitted to operate a hydraulic sequence valve
for the main gear operation.
At the outboard end of the door an .up+Leck bracket is fitted. In its
centre is a mal.n .gea'r support stop which will support the main gear when
hydraulic power fails. At the ends of the bracket a roller is fitted that
engages 'the door"up-locks.
Along the leading, edge of the door a cable fitting and stowing clips are
, fitted for the lifting cab Ie,' The cable is used to retract the door when
there is no hydraulic power.

The centre of the door features an access panel which, via a, piano-type
hinge, opens downwards and inwards. The access panel is heLd in closed
position by two sliding latches engaging in locking bushings. The, latches
are operated. by quick-release fasteners.

The inboard door is massive build because it must support the landing gear
when there is no hydraulic power. 7

Structurally the doors are built up from bonded and riveted assemblies
consisting of outer and inner skins, formers, frames.,. and strips.
.~.....
iThe plastic pads and tyre guides protect the door '.during emergency
extension. After unlocking the inboard door, the main gear will push the
door open. ' '.

actuator connected via bell cranks and shafts to the door operating rods,
which in turn are connected to driving brackets on the doors.
Each bracket features an adjustable stop bolt whic~J with the doors in
the
closed position mates on abutment brackets built onto the wa~ls of
the nose landing gear bay. The doors are normally held in the closed
position
by hydraulic pressure, backed up by a door
uplock.

Structurally the doors are built up from bonded and riveted

assemblies consisting of metal honeycomb core, sandwiched by the inner

6.1 Service Door 21A

The service door 21A is an oval plug-type quick-release·door,
located between the forward pressure.bulkhead and the nosewheel bay. It
provides access to the components located in the nose bay under the
cockpit floor.

The door con~ists of an outer skin, frames, and stiffeners, and is

secured in the closed position by.two wedge-sha.pedlocking pins~ guided
by guide fittings on the door, and which engage adjustable lock fittings
bolted to the fuselage structure.

The door can only be opened from outside the aircraft by a handle attached
to the latching mechanism, and when unlocked, it must be tilted up and
{
turned about its centre line to remove it.

The latching mechanism is of the overcentering type, and consists of

a handle on a shaft, and two locking pins interconnected by adjustable
rods. The turning movement of the ~andle is limited by a stop pin on
the shaft and a double slot in the shaft bearing housing. As the.
handle is spring-loaded to the operating position, a latch in ·front
of the handle
·keeps the handle flush with the door skin when the door is locked. A
guide·
pin attached to the door frame ensures that the door is installed in its
correct position.
A tubular seal is installed along the outer edge of the doorframe, and
is. attached to the frame by aluminium retainers and screws.
6.2 Service Doors 23A and 24A
The service doors 23A and 24A are oval plug-type quick-release

5. CARGO DOORS

5.1 General

The three cargo doors are similar as regards construction, kinematics and
latching.
Each cargo door opens outwards and downwazds , The door is hinged to
the main structure via a piano-type hinge.
During door handling a cable and drum assembly assists in opening and
closing.
A support strut, normally stowed in a clip on the door, can be attached to
a fitting in the main structure thereby holding the door in the open
position.

The doors are held a.n the closed position by two hook latches engaging
onto latch fittings in the door lintel.
For visual inspection of correct door latching the bright-red coloured
hook latches are visible through small inspection windows.

To open or close the door a door handle operates a torque tube, the ends
·of which are connected to the hook latch assemblies. A hook latch assembly
comprises a knee lever, link and heok latch. In the latched position a
'.geometric lock is formed by the p i.vor. points of the knee lever being out
of line with the pivot of link and torque tube.

The door handle :LS accessible via an access panel. This panel can only be
closed when the door handle is properly locked, meaning that the hook
latches are in the latched position.
The doer handle locking device comprises a spring-loaded lock, lever which
protrudes through a slot of the door handle.
A hole in the lock lever allows a padlock to be fitted.

4.2 Latching Mechanism

The latching mechanism comprises an inboard and outboard door handle,

which are interconnected by .three bell cranks and push~pull rods which in
turn are 'attached to the latch pins via actuating rods.
Rotation of the door handle causes the bell cranks to rotate and the latch
pins to engage or disengage. The upper and lower bell cranks have each a
drive pin, which during normal door unlatching, travel through a curved
slot in a cam lever. The two cam levers are attached to the roller units
via the release-pin actuating rods.
The intermediate bell crank carries a notch on its profile which engages
the ratchet lever of the release button assembly. This prevents the door
handle from being rotated further.

4.3 Emergency Release Mechanism

In case' the door becomes jammed in an intermediate position pressing the

emergency release button pushes away the ratchet lever which then permits
the door handle to be rotated further. The .drive pins on the upper and
lower bell cranks can now engage the end of the slot of each cam lever.
The cam .. lever will pivot and apply a pull force ·to the release-pin.
actuating rods. Therefore the release pins retract and the rollers detach
from the door. which is now free from the tracks and can be taken out.

To reset the release mechanism the release push-button must again be

depressed -.'and; at ·the same time, the' door handle must be rotated back
towards its original, latched position. The cam and lever mechanism will
cause the release pins to extend and the roller housings, when retrieved
from the door guide rails, can be re-installe.d to the release pins in
preparation for re-installing the door.
To be able to put the service/emergency door back in its normal position,
short furnishing sections of the main guide tracks must be removed.

4. SERVICE/&~RGENCY DOOR

4.1 General

This plug-type door can be opened from the inside and outside. When the
door is unlatched, it can be opened by moving the door inwards and sliding
it upwards to the overhead position. For this purpose the door has been
fitted with four roller assemblies, which guide the door along auxiliary
and main guide tracks. The two upper roller assemblies are each equipped
with a lifting lever. A lifting cable from a cable-drum assembly is
attached to the lifting lever. The cable-drum assemblies assist in moving
the door upwards by winding the cable onto a spring-loaded conical
cable-drum. The two lifting levers are each equipped with a cable guide
roller.
The door is stopped in both open and closed positions by rubber buffers.
To maintain the door in the full open position the front top roller
engages a spring-loaded detent on the main guide track.

Structurally the door consists of horizontal spars and vertical frames

which carry an outer and inner skin panel, the whole assembly composing a
box-type structure. On the inner skin a trim panel is attached which, when
removed provides access to the door operating mechanisms. The trim panel
is attached to the door with velcro tape.
The door is kept in the closed position by four wedge-shaped latch pins
engaging into holes, recessed in the door aperture. Sealing. is
accomplished by a t ubu l ar' seal, attached to the outer edge of the door
frame by means of retainers and screws.

3. OVERWING &'''!ERGENCEYXIT DOORS

The four plug-type doors, two at each side, are held in the closed
pos i t i.onby a latching mechanism. Each. door pas two adjustable hooks
at
the base and two latches at the top. The latches engage onto the abutments
'-. face of the lock plates in the door aperture. The hooks engage
into slotted holes in a catch.plate riveted onto the main structure.

The latches are secured to a shaft which is interconnected to the

internal release handle via a link.
In the latched position the pivots of the shaft, link and internal
release
handle are in overcentre providing a geometric
lock.
Two springs in tension, one end of crack is attached to the shaft,
the other end to the internal release handle, provides snapfeel and
positive
locking.

To unlatch and open the door from the inside, the release handle is
pulled downwards, overcoming the tension of the spring. This results in
the link coming out;of overcentre and causing the shaft to rotate,
disengaging the latches from the abutment faces. The door can now be
drawn inwards and downwards, resulting in the disengagement of the lower
hooks and decapping of the air tube fo.rwindow demisting.

To unlatch and open the door from the outside, the release plate must
be pushed firmly. This results in the external release lever pushing the
link out of overcentre and the -shaft :to rotate thereby disengaging the
latches from the abutment faces.

Structurally the door is. built up from bonded and riveted

assemblies, consisting of inner and outer skin panels, formers and frames
and a single piece window frame.

The tubular seal is carried on the outer edge of the door and 1S
clamped beneath a retaining strip by screws.

2.8 Emergency Brake Release

Without electrical power available the passenger door can be opened

·manually. After the door .Ls un latched,.. the brake. of the linear actuator
has to be releas.ed. The door can then be pushed open from the inside or be
pulled open from the outside.

Emergency opening·from inside.

When the door is unlatched, the inboard. door handle 1.S an the first
detent, the handle must be pushed further until the roller, mounted on
the handle engages in a spring loaded catch. The roller of the lock
release lever is now in the second detent.
The housing of the lock release lever is at the same moment pushing
against a roller wh1ch, via bell crank levers and cable operating
levers, causes the brake release cable to pull the brake release shaft
. of ..the motor.
Resetting is simply done by pulling the inboard door handle out of the
second detent.

- Emergency opening from outside.

When the door is un latched and the access panel is opened, rotating the

2.6 Actuating Mechanism

This mechanism consists of a linear actuator, a curved lever, an·

intermediate lever~ an adjustable control rod and a door actuating
bracket. The linear actuator comprises an electric motor which
drives via a reduction gearing and slip clutch a spindle. In turn the
spindle drives via a set of recirculating balls, a ball nut causing a
ram to extend or retract.
One end. of the gearbox is a self-aligning spherical bearing which is
attached to a bracket .in the roof of the forward cargo compartment.
The bracket is attached to primary structure. The driving end of the
·actuator links up with the curved lever and intermediate lever, the
latter of which operates directly the control rod to open or close the
door.

The intermediate lever allows door feed-back via a slot in it.

This permifs approximately 12 inches back movement of the door at the
full open position. A friction device is fitted to prevent shock loads
because of the slot.

The rotor of the motor is normally blocked by a brake assembly. The

brake is released magnetically when the motor operates electrically.
During eme rgency operation of the door, i.e. when no electrical power
is available, .the brake _.is .released mechanically by pulling the brake
release shaft. The door t rave l, speed is .now limited by a
centrifugal brake
assembly on the actuator. .

2.5 Lock-Release Mechanism

This mechanism keeps the inboard door handle in the locked (dow~)
position. To unlatch the passenger door the torque tube must be rotated
and therefore the inboard door handle needs to be released first. The
inboard door handle is held in the down position by the roller of the lock
release lever as sembIy and the abutment face of the cam plate. When the
lock release lever is operated the roller is withdrawn clear from the cam
plate. The inboard door handle can now be moved upwards. The roller
follows then the profile of the cam plate. On attainment of the fully
unlatched position, the cam profile changes to detent profile. Th.e roller
can run into the cam plate detent which secures the handle in the unlocked
position (fi~st detent). Locking is the reversa.l of unlocking. The
operator, however, must check that the roller of the lock release lever
has returned to the original position.

To unlatch the door from the outsi4e the outboard door handle must first
of all be pulled. Via the lock release cable a tappet lever pushes the
roller of the lock release lever assembly clear from the abutment face of
the cam plate, thus releasing the inboard door handle. Turning the
outboard door handle causes the torque tube" via the push-pull rods, to
rotate, causing the passenger door to be unlatc.hed.

2.4 Latching Mechanism

The torque tube operates the hook latch assembles directly and the
sliding back-ruppins via adjustable push-pull rods. During unlatching
an operating lever in the hook latch assembly is operated by the t
orque tube, this causes an operating rod to pivot the knee lever
which results in deploying the'overcentre link out of its geometric
lock. Furthler movement disengages the hook latch from the latch fitting
in the door. Latching is the reversal of unlatching.
Each hook latch is carried between two brackets which provide
pivot bearings for the torque tube, knee lever and hook latch. The
brackets are attached to the primary structure.
For rigging the latch geometry there are rigging holes in the brackets
and knee levers.

Operating levers at each end of the torque tube convert the

rotary movement of the tube into a linear one. Via adjustable push-pull
rods and
.idlerlever assemblies the sliding pins can move in and
out.
The inboard door handle is bolted on the torque tube. Because the
inboard door handle is normally locked in the down position by the
lock release mecharrsim; the torque tube cannot, be operated unless
the inboard door handle is unlocked; .-..

The outboard door handle is connect ed via the aft push-pull rods to
the torque tube. The outboard door·handle can be used to unlatch the
passenger door after the inboard door handle has been unlocked.
The door latch fittings are bolted onto the door structure via
adjustable serrated plates and shim pads. This allows door adjustment.

1. INTRODUCTION

Pressurized doors can be divided in plug~type and outwards opening doors.

Plug-type doors such as the --se-rvice/emergency door, the four overwing
emergency exit doors and service doors (2lA, 23A and 24A) open inwards.
Since this is impossible during pressurized flights a simple latching
system only is necessary to hold the door closed when- the aircraft is not
pressurized.

The passenger door and the three- cargo doors open outwards. They all have
a Lat ch Ing and locking system to keep the door closed during pressurized
flights.

To close the doors in non-pressurized areas such as service door 4lA and
the landing gear doors a simple door latching mechanism is prov.Lded,

2. PASSENGERDOOR

I_
2.1 General
Ii
The door is a complete .assembly with stairway, folding handrails, lights,
I
latch fittings and seal. It is opened and closed by an. electrically
operated actuating mechanism.
The door opens outwards and downwards from the fuselage.
The door is kept closed by a 1atching mechanism which comprises two hook
latches in the door lintel engaging into the latch fittings of' the door ,
There are four sliding pins installed as back+up , Normally they play no
part in holding the door closed because of their clearance fit in the
bushed holes. They hold the door in the closed position in case the hook
latches or door hinge fail.

The door can be operated from hoth in- and outside. When the door is open
the handrails can be folded down by using the quick-release couplings.

2.2 Structure

Structurally the - door is built up from bonded and riveted assemblies,

consisting of an outer skin, horizontal spars and vertical ·frames. The
inner side of the door forms the stairway.
The vented seal is bonded to the door structure and does not need special
attachment provisions.
