DEVOTION
This past Sunday Pastor Paul started a sermon series called Unique. In the series he is going to look at three stories in Acts and how we at Chain of Lakes can identify what makes us unique. In July he is going to share a devotional Bible Study on the book of Acts. Acts is a story about how the church came to be in existence. Its a wonderful story for us at Chain of Lakes to reflect as we are still learning what it means to be a church. The sermon this past Sunday was about being clear on what we offer. This week in the devotion well look at what each passage shares about being clear on what we in the church can offer this culture. Enjoy! Comments about the devotion can be emailed to pastor@colpres.org. Monday, July 11 Read Acts 1 Jesus wasnt willing to answer the question about when Israel would be restored, but he was willing to offer the disciples something elsethe Holy Spirit. Look at verse 8: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem

We at Chain of Lakes can offer the Holy Spirit to others. The Holy Spirit works in our community life. It is constantly guiding us, teaching us, and prompting us to follow. Sadly the Holy Spirit is a doctrine that is easily manipulated and misunderstood. Understanding the Holy Spirit doesnt have to be that complicated. The Spirit is the Spirit that comes from Jesus. It exists here on earth constantly leading us to God. Today as you pray, give thanks for the Holy Spirit. If you find the Holy Spirit complicated, pray for clarity. If you are unsure about the Holy Spirit, pray for more certainty. Pray that we at Chain of Lakes Church can follow the Holy Spirit in all that we do. Tuesday, July 12 Read Acts 2 We have read this story often in the history of Chain of Lakes as it is one of Pastor Pauls favorite stories. One important verse in this chapter is verse 43: Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. We at Chain of Lakes can offer this sense of awe. A synonym for awe is wow. When the local congregation is operating at its full potential things can happen that are never expected. When these things happen people sit back and say, wow. Each congregation has the capacity and ability to offer this sense of awe. When it is happening it is exciting and can even be life-changing. Today as you pray, reflect on a time when you said the word, wow. Remember a

time in your own past when a local congregation was operating at such a high level. Pray that we at Chain of Lakes can often share this sense of awe and ministries that elicit the word, wow. Wednesday, July 13 Read Acts 3 Pastor Paul preached on this story this past Sunday. Look at verse 6. Peter was addressing a lame beggar: But Peter said, I have no silver or gold, but what I have I give you; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, stand up and walk. On Sunday Pastor Paul shared that we offer a faith that believes in the impossible. Its hard to know if Peter believed he could heal the lame beggar as he looked intently at him. Whether he believed that this was possible, he certainly believed in the impossible. For he wouldnt have commanded the man to walk unless he believed in the impossible. This idea is hard for some to accept. Its easier to accept a mathematical formula or a scientific description of an event. But science couldnt adequately explain what happened to the lame beggar. Only faith could explain that he could stand up and walk. As you pray today pray for a faith that believes in the impossible. Pray that we at Chain of Lakes can articulate this type of passionate faith. Thursday, July 14 Read Acts 4 Pastor Paul will be preaching on this story on Sunday, July 17th. Look at verses 19 & 20: But Peter and John answered them, Whether it is right in Gods sight to listen to

you rather than to God, you must judge; for we cannot keep from speaking about what we have seen and heard. In the church we can offer fearlessness. Peter and John werent worried about what was going to happen to them. They were fearlessly following the Holy Spirit into this situation. It didnt matter to them what happened. This type of fearlessness is hard for us reticent Midwesterners. But with Gods help we can live without fear. Today as you pray, pray that you can live without fear. Pray that you can incorporate a sense of boldness into your own life. If you identify boldness as something you have, pray for an opportunity to share boldness today. Friday, July 15 Read Acts 5 The story of Ananias and Sapphira is challenging. It seems over-the-top and even frightening that Peter would have the two killed. This seems like too much power for one person to posses. Peter was trying to hold Ananias and Sapphira accountable. Whether this should have involved their death is a fair question. The community of people offers accountability to each other. We build each other up; we help each other; we hold each other accountable when we stray. Accountability is hard for churches. Its easier to ignore a problem than to try to address it. The Core Value of Healthy Disagreement is one way to live into this idea of accountability. Today as you pray, pray that we at Chain of Lakes can hold each other accountable.

2
Pray that we can speak the truth in love, treat others with respect and dignity, and pledge to stay in community with each other. Saturday, July 16 Read Acts 6 When the church is working well it offers adaptability. In the first part of chapter 6 the twelve apostles identified a problem that existed. They then chose to adapt to the situation and choose a different way of proceeding. They selected seven people to help in the daily distribution of food. The church is not known as a place of adaptability. Its easier to continue to follow long-standing patterns and practices instead of discerning how we can adapt to a changing culture. Today as you pray, pray that we at Chain of Lakes can live into the idea of adaptability. We arent changing our message but are adapting to a changing culture. Pray that we have the courage to adapt.
