VON BERTALANFFY’S GENERAL

SYSTEM’S THEORY
 A system is composed of separate components. The components
are interrelated and share a common purpose to form a whole.
 According to American Psychology Asssociation, General
System’s Theory is an interdisciplinary conceptual framework
focusing on the wholeness, pattern, relationship, hierarchical
order, integration, and organization of phenomena. In this
framework, an entity or phenomenon should be viewed
holistically as a set of elements interacting with one another,
and the goal of general systems theory is to identify and
understand the principles applicable to all systems.

MAJOR CONCEPTS

 SYSTEM - consists of interrelated and interdependent parts

 BOUNDARIES - defines a system and distinguish it from others.

 ORGANIZATIONAL SYSTEM
 OPEN SYSTEM - interacts with the environment, exchanging
information between the system and the environment.
 Open to the environment; involves a permeable boundary,
wherein, information and resources flow in and out.
 Exchange with the environment is essential for the health
of the system.
 INPUT - Resources or information needed
 THROUGHPUTS - processes, activities within the
organizational system
 OUTPUT - Outcomes

Example of Open System Framework

 CLOSED SYSTEMS - Excludes environmental factors in the

organization, since it is focused on internal behaviors and
functions.

 FEEDBACK
 Negative Feedback - reduce the deviation on system’s
processes
 Positive Feedback - amplify and enhance system’s current
processes

 ENTROPY - System’s disorganization

 Equilibrium - balance; variables come into system to obtain
homeostasis.
 HOLISM - The system is viewed as a whole; greater the sum of its
parts. The parts are interdependent and interact through
feedback process.

 INTERDEPENDENCE - Dynamic and interconnectivity to the

environment; mutuality.
 May refer to the interrelationship of the subparts of the
system.
 Subsystems make up the system.

 EQUIFINALITY

APPLICATION

Application of Organizational System - Open System to Nursing

 INPUT - The records derived from a patient's evaluation (e.g.,

how the patient interacts with the surroundings and the patient's
physiological state) is considered input for the nursing process.
 THROUGHPUT - The nurse assess the patient through the five
stage of nursing process, ADPIE: Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning,
Implementation, Evaluation, and Assessment.
 OUTPUT - Determining whether a patient's health improves,
deteriorates, or remains steady as a result of nursing care
