Statement of the Problem

This is more or less a summary and paraphrase of the arguments in the background without citing
any sources of information. It is done in a paragraph or at maximum two paragraphs. It culminates
with a clear expression of why the study is being carried out. This subsection doesn’t start on its
own page but begins immediately at the end of section 1.0 Subsection 1.1. See Sample 8 below.

1.2 Statement of the problem
Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya, The one-time city in the sun has gradually deteriorated in to
a city manifested in to such problems such as overcrowding, inadequate sanitation, polluted water
inefficient solid waste and liquid waste management problems, bad roads, dilapidated housing
among other ills. Less than 50% of Nairobi residents have access to piped water with only 40% of
that having access to daily water supply for the formal settlements. In the informal settlements that
constitutes to 60% of Nairobi residents only 22% have access to piped water. The sewerage
services are only accessible to 40% of Nairobi’s population. It is then evident that provision of
water and sewerage services in Nairobi city satisfies less than 50% of the required demand which
has resulted to erratic water rationing in most parts of the Nairobi. Inadequate infrastructure, poor
planning and operational problems can be said to the cause of inaccessible water and sanitation
services in Nairobi. This study seeks to investigate change management required by Nairobi Water
and Sewerage Company to improve on its performance of supplying water and sanitation services.

1.2. Objectives of the Study

This refers to the specific targets of the research. The beginning is to restate the topic in the format
of an objective. Under the overall objective, state the specific objectives which address the overall
objective. The specific objectives are numbered. See sample 9 below

Sewerage Company.

2. To establish the performance of Nairobi Water and Sewerage company.

Company?

2. What is the performance of Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company?

3. What is the effect of change management on the performance of Nairobi Water and
Sewerage Company?

1.4. Scope of the Study

This refers to the coverage of the study. It means how far the study will go in depth and width.
Depth refers to the issues the study intends to find out about. Width refers to what and who will
be included in the study in terms of context. In short, Scope of Study refers to the boundaries of
the study area and the study objectives. See Sample 11 below.

Sample 11
1.5 Scope of the study
Nairobi is the capital city and largest city of Kenya with an elevation of 1795m above sea level.
There are 985,016 households resulting to a population of 3,138,369 (census, 2009). Nairobi is an
international regional, national and local hub for commerce, transport, regional cooperation and
economic development with an elevation of 1795m above sea level. It connects together Eastern,
Central and South African countries. It is a centre of international diplomacy, finance, banking,
health, education amongst other essential services because if its facilities and its strategic position
in the African continent. Nairobi generates 45% of the country’s GDP (UNEP, 2004) and thus is
a major contributor Kenya’s economy. Lack of services and infrastructure constrains Nairobi’s
economic development. Provision of water and sanitation services is vital to the Nairobi’s
population growth which then puts available resources under serious pressure. Nairobi experiences
acute water supply shortages in addition to problems of distribution, waste management, illegal
connections and mal practices amongst the staff all which contribute to inadequate supply of water
and sanitation services.

1.5. Justification of the Study

Justification of the study refers to the benefits that will accrue from the study It gives the
importance or significance of the study highlighting first the importance of context and concept of
study then the various groups that stand to benefit from the study and how they would benefit. See
sample 12 below.

1.6 Significance of the study

Water and sanitation are amongst the critical utilities that are important to mankind. This is because
they have a direct implication on the economy’s growth rate, environment and the society at large.
Delivering safe and secure water and sewerage services relies on there being enough treatment
capacity to satisfy customer demand. It also relies on infrastructure being maintained to a level
that ensures service delivery is not interrupted during normal operations. A significant level of
attention should be given to factors that contribute to improvement of performance of water and
sewerage companies. The findings of this study will guide the management in identifying how its
management practice affects its performance on the provision of water and sanitation services.
The company’s top management will utilize the findings of this report to develop more appropriate
strategies that will go a long way in helping the company achieve its objectives. The stake holders
will be enlightened on the management practice the company needs to work on so to improve the
company’s performance on the provision of water and sewerage services in Nairobi Scholars will
also benefit from the study as it will contribute to the existing literature in the field of organization
management practices in relation to performance

1.6. Conceptual Framework

This is a diagrammatic representation of interrelationships of concepts in the study as
hypothesized by the researcher. A small explanation accompanies the diagram to give the
interplay of the variables. See sample 13 below
