Group 10 Lesson Plan

The document provides a detailed lesson plan on volcanoes for 5th grade science students. It includes learning objectives, materials, and a step-by-step procedure. The lesson plan covers defining volcanoes, classifying them by activity and cone type, and appreciating their value through slogan making. The procedure involves reviewing the previous lesson, a mentos-soda experiment for motivation, defining key terms, a presentation on volcano types and effects, and an individual activity to create slogans about volcanoes.

A Detailed Lesson Plan in Science V
Prepared by: Ceasar Rey O. De Domingo
Kheya Sheen B. Santerio

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of 40-minute lesson, pupils should be able to
a. define what is a volcano, its harmful and beneficial effects (Cognitive)
b. classify volcanoes according to volcanic activity and according to the types of
cone (Cognitive)
c. appreciate the value and significance of volcanoes through slogan making
(Psychomotor and Affective)
Values Integration:
Valuing God’s Creation

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Volcano and Volcanic Eruptions
Instructional Materials: model of a Volcano, colorful visual aids, video clip,
PowerPoint presentation, writing materials.
Reference: Exploring Today’s Science and Health, pp.242-250

III. Procedure
Teacher Activity Pupil Activity
A. Daily Routine
• Prayer (Lord’s Prayer)

• Checking of Learning Environment

• Greetings
Good Morning Class! Good morning, teacher!

How is your day? It is good teacher!

• Checking of Attendance
Class Secretary, are there any absentees
for today? There is no one teacher!
• Checking of Assignments
Class, were you able to accomplish your
assignments last meeting? Yes teacher
If so, pass it to the center then forward so
I can check it later.
(Pupils will pass their assignments)
• Introduction of new rule
Class for today we will have a new and
exciting rule. I will divide the class into
two groups. Each group will have a
container having five marbles each.
Those marbles will serve as your
beginning additional points for the activity
today. If your group actively participates
in our discussion, I will be adding marbles
to your container. But, if your group
doesn’t listen and participate in our
discussion, I will be deducting marbles
and transfer it to the other group. This
ground rule is effective starting now. Is
that clear?
Yes teacher!
B. Review
Let us have first a short recap about our
topic last meeting. Last time we talked
about Underwater Earthquakes, right? Yes teacher!
In order for me to know if you can still
remember our lesson last meeting, I have
here some questions for you to answer. (Pupils will answer questions
presented in the presentation)
Questions:
1. It is defined as the earthquakes
occurring in the seafloor -FAULTING
2. Are giant ocean waves caused by
tremors -TSUNAMIS
3. It may cause big amount of water
above the landslide -UNDERWATER LANDSLIDES
4. Are big waves produced by an
earthquake at the bottom of a lake, -SEICHES
rivers or oceans

Very good class! It seems that you really

understand full our topic last meeting.
C. Motivation

 Experiment
Let us have a short experiment before we
move to our lesson for today. I will be
grouping you into to two.
Here are the materials: Soda, Mentos
and a container
Before doing the activity, please be
guided by the following questions:

Guide Questions:

1. What happened when the Mentos

was dropped inside the bottle of - The Mentos reacted to the soda
soda? which results to some sort of
2. Have you seen or even heard of outburst or explosion
some explosions? - Yes teacher! Like bomb
3. What landform do usually explosions
explodes? - Volcanic Explosions teacher!
- Volcanoes teacher
Procedure:
1. Put the bottle of Soda at the center
of the container.
2. Cut the Mentos into two parts.
3. Open the bottle of soda and
immediately put the pieces of
Mentos inside the bottle of soda.
4. Observe what will happen.

Class, with the help of our experiment,

what do you think is our topic for today?
- Our topic for today is all about
 Unlocking of Difficulties volcanoes Sir!
Very Good class! Before we move to our
lesson let us have first an activity.

D. Presentation/ Discussion

A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s

crust through which hot molten rock and
gaseous materials are formed out. A
volcanologist is a scientist who studies
the nature and characteristics of a
volcano. The Opening of the volcano is
called the crater or vent. We call the hot
molten gases and materials as magma if
those are still inside the volcano. On the
other hand, if those are already brought
out, we call them lava.

We can classify volcanoes in two ways.

According to volcanic activities and
according to the type of cones or slopes.

• According to Volcanic Activities

1. Active Volcanoes
• Erupts every now and then or may
have erupted over short period of
time. They also show seismic
activity from time to time.
Examples of Active Volcanoes

Taal Volcano Mayon Volcano

Mt. Kanlaon Mt. Fuji

2. Dormant Volcanoes
• Show no signs of activity for some
quite some time. They have not
erupted for a long time but may
soon be active again.
Examples of Dormant Volcanoes

Mt. Apo Mt. Santo Tomas

• According to type of cones or

slopes
1. Shield or Lava Cones Volcanoes
- Have gentles slopes and broad
base. These volcanoes are formed
when lava flows out quietly from
the crater down the slope.
Examples of Shield Cone Volcanoes

Kilauea in Hawaii Mauna Loa in Hawaii

2. Cinder Cone Volcanoes

- Are usually formed from ashes
and other dust materials which are
thrown up high and harden before
they reach the ground. Those
volcanoes have steep slope and
narrow base.
Examples of Cinder Cone Volcanoes

Mt. Krakatau Mt. Paricutin

In Indonesia in Mexico

Volcanic Eruptions have both harmful

and beneficial effects:
The harmful effects are:
➢ It causes great damage to life,
property and agriculture.
➢ It can cause changes on climate
and weather patterns.
The Beneficial effects are;
➢ It can be a source of geothermal
energy
➢ Volcanic materials make the soil
fertile
➢ Steam and gases are used to
produce chemicals
➢ Rocks and stones are used in
constructions.

E. Generalization
Class let us summarize our lesson for - A volcano is an opening in the
today. Again what is a volcano? Earth’s crust through which hot
molten rock and gaseous materials
are formed out, teacher!
How about a volcanologist? - A volcanologist is a scientist who
studies the nature and
characteristics of a volcano

Then, what do we call the opening of a - Crater or Vent, teacher!
volcano?
What are the classification of volcanoes - Teacher, according to volcanic
then? activities and types of cones.

Then, what are the kinds of volcanoes - Active and Dormant Volcanoes,
according to volcanic activities? teacher

How about the kinds of volcanoes

according to the types of cone? - Shield Cone and Cinder Cone
Volcanoes, teacher
Very Good class. I am glad that you
understand our topic for today.

F. Application

Individual Activity

Directions: Create a slogan that shows

the significance or value of volcanoes for
human beings. Finish the activity in five
minutes only.
