A Semi- detailed Lesson Plan in English 7

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected
to:
a. Determine the different types of contextual clues
through the given statements or sentences;
b. Use contextual clues to identify the meaning of an unfamiliar
word or expression;
c. Explain the importance of contextual clues in unlocking the meaning of an
unfamiliar word or expression.

II. Subject Matter

A. Preliminaries

6. Review of the past lesson

B. Motivation
• The students will identify the different and famous chosen characters
by giving clues and hints that will help them guess the characters.

1. He is living at the Bikini Bottom and famous for cooking crabby


patties. His best friend is Patrick Star.
2. She is one of the Disney princesses. She has a cruel stepmother
and two stepsisters. One night, she met her fairy godmother and
made her a beautiful princess because of her kindness.
3. He is one of the marvel heroes. He has superpowers but his
weakness is a kryptonite.
Motive Questions:
1. What did you observe in guessing the character in our activity?
2. What help you in determining the correct character in the given description?
3. Do you think it is really helpful to have hints and clues in determining
something that is not given directly? How and why?

C. Discussion
- The teacher will be going to discuss the
Contextual Clues and its type.

Contextual Clues are hints and information found within a sentence,


paragraph or passages that a reader can use to understand the
meaning of a new and unfamiliar words.
Two General types of context clues:
1. Experiences clues
2. Word or phrase clue
Other types of contextual clues:
1. Definition and explanation
2. Synonyms
3. Antonyms
Guide Questions:
1. What is a contextual Clue?
2. What are the different types of contextual Clues?
3. How can we use the different types of contextual clues?
4. Aside from looking into contextual clues, what do you think is the
first thing you should do in case you encounter an unfamiliar word or
expression in a sentence?
5. Is it important to have contextual clues in determining an unfamiliar
word? Why do you say so?

D. Application
• The students will identify the type of contextual clue that was used in
each sentence.
Directions: Determine the type of contextual clue that was used in
each sentence.
1. Martha is a curator, a person who is responsible for looking after
museum collections.
2. Carnivores or meat eaters are at the top of the food chain.
3. While Luis is hardworking, his indolent brother spends most of his
time watching TV or sitting around with friends.
4. Miguel was very loquacious. He really loved to talk.
5. Ms. Heart is very compassionate and is caring to others.

E. Generalization
To summarize the discussion, the teacher will ask the
following questions.

1. What was our lesson all about?


2. What are the contextual clues and its type?
3. How are the different contextual clues become important in unlocking
the meaning of an unfamiliar word or expression?

IV. Evaluation
•The students will be going to analyze and determine the type of contextual
clue that is being describe in each statement.

1. A type of context clue wherein the meaning of an unknown word is


determined through the given opposite meaning.
2. These are clues or hints the reader can use to know the meaning of an
unfamiliar word.
3. The meaning of unfamiliar words is expressed through more familiar
words in the sentence.

4. These are the other words in the phrase, paragraph or sentence


containing the unfamiliar word which help the reader to get its
meaning.

5. The reader depends on his past experience to recognize the particular


meaning of the word.

V. Assignment
• The students will answer the activity in their English book (page 41).
