 Explanation :
#Definiton of Report Text :
Report Text is a type of text in English that describes the details of an object. Details
in this text are scientific details which include the description of objects, both
physical and non-physical, from scientific facts about the object.
#Purpose of Report Text :
– Its social purpose is presenting information about something. They generally
describe an entire class of things, whether natural or made: mammals, the planets,
rocks, plants, countries of region, culture, transportation, and so on.
– To presents information about something, as it is.
# Characteristics of Report Text
• Contains scientific facts
• The title text looks more general
• Using the Simple Present Tense
• General Classification

• General Classification
This section contains general statements that describe the object description of this
Report Text.
• Description
This section usually provides a description of the phenomenon or situation that
occurs, both its parts, nature, habits, or behavior. In essence, this section describes
the classification presented scientifically. However, the thing to remember is that
Report Text is not a news text, but scientific factual text.
 Example 1 :
Volcano Eruption
Volcanic eruptions are a process of the magma exiting from within the magma
chamber located inside the volcano. This happens because there is magma activity
as well as tectonic plate movement. (General Classification)
Volcanic eruptions are one of the natural disasters because it carries magma, hot
and cold lava, dense ash and others. As a result, the land around the volcano will be
damaged, disrupting the farming activities of the surrounding residents. Residents
will also lose livestock, homes and other valuables.
Nevertheless, volcanic eruptions will bring benefits for the long term. Because the
volcanic ash that comes out will make the surrounding agricultural land fertile.
Materials that come out such as sand and stone can be used for new housing
developments and others. In addition, new jobs such as sand mining will be opened
so that people who lose their property can continue to work to obtain their daily
needs. (Description)
 Example 2 :
Earthquake
Actually there are three kinds of earthquake. This kinds of earthquake are commonly
base on the factor and geological area where the earthquakes happen. These three
kinds of earthquake are tectonic, volcanic and explosion. (General Classification)
Tectonic earthquakes are most common one. This kind of earthquake happens while
earth’s crust rocks break because of the geological strength created by moving of
the earth’s plates. Volcanic earthquakes happen exactly with volcanic activity.
Volcanic earthquakes are when the volcano produces acidic lava, which drys
quickly, when it dries quickly it blocks the top of the volcano. This make no more
magma can escape. Pressure starts to build up and eventually the acidic lava can
no longer stand the pressure. So the volcano is free to explode, the pressure is
released so fast that an earthquake is caused. A volcanic earthquake is usually kept
within 10-20 miles of the volcano. (Description)

#Definition of News Item :
News item text is a text which informs readers about events of the day. The events
are considered newsworthy or important. It means if there is an important event that
should be known by many people, then this event deserves news. Well, the news
text is called the news item text. However, if there are events that people do not
deserve, then they are not definitely worth to be news.
#Purpose of News Item :
News Item Text is used to inform readers about events of the day which are
considered newsworthy or important.
#Language Feature of News Item :
– Focusing on circumstances (using a simple language in writing the text)
– Using saying verbs: “….”, She said, informed, told, reported.
– Sometimes at the beginning of news, the scene is mentioned : Jakarta – … .. /
Kuala Lumpur – …
– Using Past tense in explaining news events. But if it is a fact that until now still
happen or still in the form of fact, then can use simple present tense.
– Short, telegraphic information about story captured in headline
– Using adverbs: time, place and manner.
– Uses of material processes to retell the event
 Generic Structure of News Item :

#Main Events / Newsworthy event(s): it recounts the event in summary form.
#Elaboration / Background event(s): they elaborate what happened, to whom, in
what circumstance
#Resource of Information (Source) : it contains comments by participants in,
witnesses to and authorities expert on the event

Example of News Items Text about Death of Didi Petet
Didi Petet Died
Veteran actor Didi Widiatmoko, popularly known as Didi Petet, died at the age of
58 at his residence in Sasak Tinggi, Ciputat, South Tangerang, on Friday morning.

Didi’s niece Muthia Kautsar said that Didi, who starred in a number of comedy
and drama films in the 1980s and 1990s, collapsed and lost consciousness when
attending an expo in Milan, Italy, recently.
“He just arrived home on May 10 after attending the exhibition. In that city, he
collapsed and lost consciousness and returned home in a wheelchair,” she said.
On Tuesday, Didi was taken to Bandung for treatment. Muthia said no diseases
were detected but he died on Friday.
Didi’s body is laid out in his residence on Jl. Bambu Apus in Sasak Tinggi,
Ciputat, South Tangerang. It has yet to be decided when and where he will be

An entomologist Mark Moffett, 55, discovered the cricket-like creature up a tree

on New Zealand’s Little Barrier Island. He spent two days searching for the creepy
crawly which were thought to be extinct after Europeans brought rats to the island
many years ago.
“This became all the more amazing when we realized that this was the largest
insect recorded.” Mark said. (Background events)
