Full marks are not necessarily awarded for a correct answer with no working. Answers
must be supported by working and/or explanations. In particular, solutions found from a
graphic display calculator should be supported by suitable working. For example, if
graphs are used to find a solution, you should sketch these as part of your answer.
Where an answer is incorrect, some marks may be given for a correct method, provided
this is shown by written working. You are therefore advised to show all working.

Section A
1.

[Maximum mark: 6]
A metal cone has a radius of 12.5 cm and a height of 21 cm.
(a.) Find the volume of the cone expressing your answer in the form 𝑝 × 10𝑞 , 1 ≤ 𝑝 <
10 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑞 ∈ 𝑍. [3]
The cone is to be melted down and remoulded into the shape of a cylinder with a
height of 10.2 cm.

(b.) Find the radius of the base of the cylinder, correct to 2 significant figures. [3]
2.

[Maximum mark: 5]

An arithmetic sequence has first term 212 and the common difference of -12.5.

(a.) Find the 24th term of the sequence. [2]

(b.) Find the first positive term of the sequence. [3]

3. [Maximum Mark: 5]

The line L passes through the point (4, 5) and is perpendicular to the line 𝑦 = 2.5𝑥 + 7. If (a,4) lies
on the line L’, then find the value of ‘a’.

4.

[Maximum mark:6]

Solve 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 (𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 6) = 1 + 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 (𝑥 − 3)

5. [Maximum mark: 8]

(b) Find the values of a for which 𝑆∞ exists. [3]

(c) Find the value of a when 𝑆∞ = 54 [3]

6.

[Maximum mark : 7]

Let 𝑓(𝑥) = 4 − 𝑥 3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑙𝑛𝑥, 𝑥 > 0

(a) Find (𝑓𝑜𝑔)(𝑥). [2]

(b) (i) Solve the equation (𝑓𝑜𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑥.

(ii) Hence or otherwise, find the value of a, given that 𝑔(2𝑎) = 𝑓 −1 (2𝑎). [5]

Do not write solutions on this page.

Clara organizes cans in triangular piles, where each row has one less can than the row
below. For example, the pile of 15 cans shown has 5 cans in the bottom row and 4 cans
in the row above it.

(a) A pile has 20 cans in the bottom row. Show that the pile contains 210 cans.
(4)
AKAH/ DP1/2021-22/Nov Exam/Mathematics/AASL

(b) There are 3240 cans in a pile. How many cans are in the bottom row?
(5)

(c) (i) There are S cans and they are organized in a triangular pile with n cans in
the bottom row. Show that n2 + n − 2S = 0.
