CONTENT STANDARDS: The learners demonstrate understanding of key concepts of rational functions.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: The learner is able to accurately formulate and solve real-life
problems involving rational functions.
LEARNING COMPETENCIES: The learner distinguishes rational function, rational equation, and
rational inequality.

B. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
“Home to School”
James lives about 20 km from office. For one week, James keeps track of the time it
takes him to get to the office as shown on table below. He wanted to figure out his
average speed based on the time he recorded. Can you help James?
Day Time (hours) Speed (kph)
Monday 1
Tuesday 1.1
Wednesday 1.25
Thursday 1.20
Friday 2
Any day n
2. Analysis
In analyzing the concept, the group will answer the following questions:
1. How did you find the activity?
2. How did you come up with the answer?
3. How do the group will relate the activity in the lesson?
3. Abstraction/Application
RATIONAL FUNCTION is a fraction of polynomials as a function written as a
quotient of polynomials
That is, if p(x) and q(x) are polynomials and q(x) ≠0,
p ( x)
Then f(x) = is a rational function.
q(x)
The numerator is p(x) and the denominator is q(x).
Examples:
3
3(x−5) 1 2x 3
1. f ( x )= 2.f(x)= 3. f ( x )= =2 x
x −1 x 1
The last example is both a polynomial and a rational function. In a similar way,
any polynomial is a rational function.
RATIONAL EQUATION is an equation in which one or more of the terms is
a fractional one. This equation is a comparison of equality of expressions using
equal sign (=).
Examples:
3( x−5) 1 2 x3 4 x 2−4
1. =4 2. =0 3. = 3
x−1 x 1 x −3 x +4
2
Examples:
3 2
3( x −5) 1 2x 4 x −4
1. >4 2. ≤0 3. ≥ 3
x−1 x 1 x −3 x 2 +4
IV. EVALUATION
I. Matching Type. Use that 4 x2 −4=4 ( x−1 ) ( x +1 ) , x 3 −3 x 2 +4= ( x +1 ) ( x−2 )2∧2 x−4=2 ( x−2 )
to match each of the three numbered rational functions on the left with its simplified
lettered form on the right.
2
4 x −4 1
1. A.) ( x+ 1 )( x−2)
3 2
x −3 x + 4 2
3 2
x −3 x + 4 4 ( x−1 )
2. B.)
2 x−4 ( x −2 )2
2 x−4 ( x−2 )
3. 2 C.)
4 x −4 2 ( x +1 ) (x−2)
V. AGREEMENT
