Lithium Battery Date Codes
Lithium Battery Date Codes
1. The first digit shows the last digit of the year (7 = 1997).
2. The second digit shows the month code.
The following codes are used to indicate the month:
1 = Jan., 2 = Feb., 3 = March, 4 = April, 5 = May, 6 = June, 7 = July, 8 = Aug, 9 = Sept.
0 = Oct., Y = Nov., Z = Dec.
3. The third digit shows the week of the month.
1 = First week, 2 = Second week, 3 = Third week, 4 = Fourth week
4. The fourth digit shows the day of the week.
1 = Mon., 2 = Tues., 3 = Wed., 4 = Thur., 5 = Fri., 6 = Sat., 7 = Sun.
Example: A date code of “7612” indicates that the battery was assembled on Tuesday the first week of June 1997
(June 3, 1997).
*Exceptions:
• User replaceable batteries sold in the North America market (CR123A, CR-P2, 2CR5). The date codes on
these batteries reflect a 10 year expiration date (MM/YYYY). Thus, the date of manufacture can be
determined by subtracting 10 years. Example: 052011 date code = Expiration date of May, 2011
(production date code is May 2001)
• User replaceable batteries sold in the European market (CR123A, CR-P2, 2CR5). The date codes on these
batteries reflect a date of manufacture in the (YMW) format as described in steps 1, 2 & 3 above.
** Exceptions: VL Series, ML series, MT Series and NBL series coin cells smaller than 9.5 mm in diameter use a 3
digit date code system. The first and second digits use the same format as the coin types listed above and the third
digit shows the day of the month as indicated in the table below.
Example of 3 digit system: A date code of “78R” indicates that the battery was assembled on August 25, 1998.
Part numbers using this system are: VL621, ML612S, ML614S, ML616S, ML621S, ML920S MT516, MT616,
MT621, MT920, NBL621.
