The live weight of an animal before slaughter and the dressed carcass weight of that animal after
slaughter usually differ. As a result the dressing percentages of livestock are therefore always less
than 100 percent. Based on studies in broiler production, the dressing percentage of broiler chickens
range from 75 percent - 80 percent. However, at the Grenada Boys’ Secondary school the dressing
percentage of the broilers reared at the school’s farm is unknown.
Objectives:
Start Date: 22nd November 2021
End Date: 31st january 2022
Arrival of chicks: 29th November 2021
Materials/Equipment:
shovel- used to remove litter from pen and turn the litter every week
plastic bags- used to place the meat after slaughtering and dressing
scale- used for weighing of feed and measuring the weight of the chicken
feeder- used to provide food to the chickens
knife- used for slaughtering of chickens
Activities:
Pen Preparation- removing of old litter, putting bags around the cage
Weighting of chickens- half of chicken were weighed every monday. The chicken was placed on the scale
one by one. The weight for each chicken was read and recorded . Then the weight was determined
Marketing- the chicken was measured to record death weight and then placed in plastic bag to be sold
Slaughtering of chickens- at week 9 the birds was slaughter 12 live birds was removed from the pen to
slaughter the live weight was recorded
Weighting of Broilers- the chicken and recorded every monday once a week
