Management Team:
In your previous lesson, you are done with the different rock-forming minerals
such as diamond, corundum, topaz, quartz, gold, gypsum, talc, and etc. You also
learned about the classification of rocks: the igneous rocks which are formed from
cooling magma, the sedimentary rocks which are from lithification of rock and
mineral fragments, and the metamorphic rocks which are formed from heat and/or
pressure.
This module will provide you with information and activities that will help you
understand the uses of minerals important in our society.
Before going on, check how much you know about this topic. Answer
the pretest on the next page in a separate sheet of paper.

From housed hold items, to industrial applications, to science and technology,
to medical applications and, to food production – minerals are everywhere.
Jumpstart
Our independence on minerals begins with the most basic requirement for life
– food. Minerals are necessary for many activities involved in putting food on our
tables, such as fertilizers made from potash, phosphate rock, sulfur, nitrogen that
all help plants grow. Farmers use metal tractors and other equipment to plant and
harvest crops.
6
Minerals are the basic of construction. They provide the building blocks for
the houses and apartment buildings; for town and cities; and for the roads,
highways, and bridges that connect them together. Every type of modern dwelling is
built from minerals.
Many of the goods and products we use each day are made from minerals.
Stoves, televisions, refrigerators, microwave ovens, washing machines, radios, and
diswashers contain steel, aluminum, and other metals.
Transportaion would not exist without minerals. From the convenience store
down the street to space travel to the Moon and beyond, minerals are used to make
it happen. Cars, trucks, buses; trains, subways, and the rails they run on; barges,
ships, and the cranes that unload them- all are made from metal.
The advances in electronics and computer technology that made possible the
exploration of space and hundreds of other technical achievements would not be
possible without minerals. For instance, coppers’s ability to conduct electricity not
only allow us to light and heat buildings, but also opened the way to a world of
machines that can do many different tasks.
Minerals also provide the materials needed for artistic expression. Painters
and sculptors use mineral products – pigments, clay, and marble. The photographer
and moviemaker would have no art without silver because silver is used to make
film.

These pieces of information are the reasons why mining is vibrant in our
country. However, do we have to mine all of these mineral resources? What would
mining do to our environment?
To ensure that the impact on the environment and the people are addressed,
mining firms are required to commit funds from their profit for social and
environmental development. DENR-MGB (2014) reported that for 2015, about
PhP6.365 billion have been committed to the development of the mining and host
communities through the mining firms’ approved Social Development and
Management programs that would have benefited about 711 barangays; PhP29.211
billion for the implementation of approved Environmental Protection and
Enhancement Program; and PhP1.278 billion for implementation of approved Final
Mine Rehabilitation and/or Decommissioning Plans.
