Axial Fan Lab Experiment Moduleedited

This document provides instructions for an experiment using an axial fan to record fan and system characteristics curves. The objectives are to identify characteristic data, investigate dependencies on suction volume flow, and record characteristic curves. The experiment procedures describe how to vary the throttle valve at constant fan speeds to generate fan curves, and how to vary the fan speed at a constant throttle position to generate system curves. Data is recorded for pressure, flow, power, and efficiency at different operating points to plot the characteristic curves.

AXIAL FAN

I. OBJECTIVES:

 Identifying characteristic data.

 Investigation of typical dependencies (pressure increase, efficiency, etc., dependent on the suction volume flow).
 Recording fan characteristic curves.
 Recording system characteristic curves and operating point.

II. INTRODUCTION:

The experimental unit conveys ambient air. It is designed as a tabletop unit. It essentially consists of the axial fan with
integrated drive motor, the intake pipe and the delivery pipe with throttle valve. The axial fan's pressure increase is
measured directly. The suction volume is calculated from the change in pressure when flowing into the intake pipe.

III. APPARATUS:

 AXIAL FAN HM 282

 GUNT SOFTWARE

IV. EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE:

A. In order to record a fan characteristic, the throttling is varied while under constant fan speed.

1. Observe the safety instructions.

2. Connect experimental unit to the mains power supply.
3. Turn main switch to "1".
4. Start the PC. Start the measurement data acquisition program.
5. Tare values in the system diagram (see figure opposite).
6. Enter ambient pressure in the system diagram.
7. Select "Measurement Diagram" in the program.
8. Enable new series of measurements. Make any setting for the measurements file.
9. Switch on axial fan, select speed of 60%, 65%, 70%, 75%, 85%, 90%, or 95%.
10. For the first measurement, close the throttle valve completely (position 0,0).
11. Wait until the displayed measurement is stable.
 Then record measurements (the current measurement data set is written to the measurements file).
 The program is now ready for the next measurement.
12. Open the throttle valve a little bit.
 The position of the throttle valve is dependent on the desired number of measurement points. Meaningful
characteristics are often obtained with 5 to 6 measurement points.
13. Repeat steps 11 and 12 until the last measurement point is taken with the throttle valve fully open (position
2,5).
14. Save measurements file.
15. Plot the fan characteristics as big as possible by adjusting the scales of the axes.
16. Save a screenshot of the fan characteristics in a file.

17. Switch off axial fan.

18. Stop the measurement data acquisition program.
19. Main switch to "0".

B. In order to record a system characteristic, the speed is varied while the throttle valve remains in the same position.

1. Observe the safety instructions.

2. Connect experimental unit to the mains power supply.
3. Turn main switch to "1".
4. Start the PC. Start the measurement data acquisition program.
5. Tare values in the system diagram.
6. Enter ambient pressure in the system diagram.
7. Select "Measurement Diagram" in the program.
8. Enable new series of measurements. Make any setting for the measurements file.
9. Adjust throttle valve (position 1.75, or 2.0).
10. For the first measurement, switch on the axial fan and choose a speed of 10%.
11. Wait until the displayed measurement is stable.
 Then record the measurements.
12. Increase the speed slightly. The speed increase is dependent on the desired number of measurement points.
Meaningful characteristics are often obtained with 5 to 6 measurement points.
13. Repeat steps 11 and 12 until the last measurement point is taken at maximum speed.
14. Save measurements file.
15. Plot the system characteristics as big as possible by adjusting the scales of the axes.
16. Save a screenshot of the system characteristics in a file.
17. Switch off axial fan.
18. Stop the measurement data acquisition program.
19. Main switch to “0”.
