Open and Short Circuit Analysis in Simple Circuits

The document describes an experiment to analyze open circuit and short circuit conditions in a simple circuit. The circuit includes two switches, two incandescent lamps, a voltmeter and ammeter. In the first sentence, it defines an open circuit as having high or infinite resistance between terminals, allowing voltage but no current flow. In the second sentence, it defines a short circuit as having low or zero resistance between terminals, allowing high current flow. The third sentence explains that opening one switch creates an open circuit, and closing the other switch shorts one of the lamps.

OPEN CIRCUIT AND SHORT CIRCUIT TEST (ANALYSIS) IN A SIMPLE

CIRCUIT

Aim:

To understand open circuit and short circuit in a given simple circuit.

Apparatus required:

Sl.No Name of the apparatus Type Range Quantity

1. Open circuit and short - - 1No.
circuit test/analysis kit unit
a. 1-way switches - - (2No.)
b. Incandescent lamp - - (2No.)
c. Voltmeter MI (0-300)V (1 No.)
d. Ammeter MI (0-5)A (1 No.)
2. Connecting wires/ - - As many
Patch cards required

Theory:

1. During open circuit condition, resistance between open circuited terminals is high
(ideally infinity), zero current will flows but there will be voltage between those two
points.
2. During short circuit condition, resistance between short circuited terminals is low
(ideally zero), high amount of current will flows.
3. In the circuit diagram shown above, there are two switches (S 1 and S2) connected. If
S1 is opened, there will be open circuit and current in the circuit is zero. If S 2 is closed
bulb R2 will be shorted (means excluded from the circuit).

Circuit Diagram:
Procedure:

● Make the connections as given in the circuit diagram.

● First connect LED lamp.
● Switch ON MCB.
● Fill the observation table by changing switch-1 and 2 positions.
● Analyze the circuit (find open circuit and short circuit conditions).
● Switch off the MCB.

3.
4.

*1. Identify which bulb is shorted and opened.

2. Get the condition of open circuit and short circuit
3. Trace the current path.
3. Calculate the resistances of both the lamps from the observation table.

Result:

Open circuit and short circuit conditions were analyzed and understood in a given simple circuit.
