Occupied Bed
Definition: The procedure that used lines are changed to a hospitalized patient is an occupied bed.

Purpose:

 To provide clean and comfortable bed for the patient


 To reduce the risk of infection by maintaining a clean environment
 To prevent bed sores by ensuring there are no wrinkles to cause pressure points

Equipment:

 Linen hamper
 Top sheet, drawsheet, bottom sheet
 Pillowcase
 Blanket
 Bath blanket

Rationale:

Assessment

1. To assess necessity and sufficient condition


2. Promotes efficiency.
Planning

3. Prevents the spread of microorganisms.


4. Facilitates a smooth procedure.

Implementation

5. Promotes client cooperation.


6. relaxes the client.
7. Facilitates easy removal of linens. Lowering only side rail close to nurse reduces client’s risk of
falls.
8. Provides space to place clean linens.
9. Keeps soiled linens together. Promotes comfort when client later rolls to other side.
10. Soiled linens can easily be removed and clean linens are positioned to make the other side of the
bed.
11. Provides for maximum fit of sheets and decreases chance of wrinkles.
12. Holds linens firmly in place
13. Drawsheet facilitates moving and lifting clients while in bed.
14. Positions client off of soiled linens.
15. Protects client from falling and prevents cross-contamination
16. Soiled linens can contaminate your uniform, which may come into contact with other clients
17. Tight sheets keep linens wrinkle free and decrease the risk of skin irritation.
18. Wrinkled linens can cause skin irritation.
19. Provides client with top sheet and blanket to prevent chilling.
20. Tucking these pieces together saves time and provides neat, tight corners.
21. Permits client to move feet under the sheets. Provides room under the tight top sheet and blanket.
Prevents toe decubitus and sheet burns from pressure.
