ASSIGNMENT 12 Omn
ASSIGNMENT 12 Omn
1. How does knowing the five stages of group development help you as the manager?
Ensure the time to celebrate the project’s success, capture lessons learned and share and capture
best practices for future projects. Even a small gathering for dinner or drinks after work or
meeting for coffee in the cafeteria is a welcome opportunity for the team members who have
worked hard to reach their goal.
Your ability as a project manager to facilitate the team through the stages ensures that you have a
high performing team as quickly as possible to meet the project’s objectives. As a project
manager, you must learn to guide your team effectively – providing strong guidance and
direction early on and letting the team solve their own problems and resolve differences as they
move through the stages.
2. What is an informal group and can informal groups form within an organization?
There are two types of group, namely, formal groups and informal groups. Formal groups are the
ones that are created as per official authority, so as to fulfill the desired objective. Unlike,
informal groups are formed by the employees as per their likes, interests, and attitudes.
Why do people join informal groups in an organization?
People join groups because they satisfy their affiliation, achievement, power and other social and
esteem needs. New residents in a locality, for example, join the local club to satisfy their
individual needs. Even at work places, informal groups provide them mental rest and release
their official tensions.
What are formal and informal groups in an organization?
Both formal and informal groups will exist with inside an organization. Formal groups have been
structured by the organization’s management to achieve particular goals or to simply run the
business. Informal groups are friendship and social groups formed by the employees within the
organization.
3. Discuss how group structure, group processes, and group tasks influence group performance
and satisfaction. Group structure:
Roles affect group performance and satisfaction by which role each member play. If
every member plays a single role with high responsibility (role cannot be played more
than one because a problem will arise if a member play two role simultaneously) then
"the best group performance and satisfaction" can be achieved easily.
Norms affect group performance and satisfaction by dictate things such as work output
levels, absenteeism, promptness, and the amount of socializing on the job.
Conformity. See exhibit 13-4 about Asch’s cards and try to understand it. It will tell you
how conformity affect group performance and satisfaction. Basically, if conformity go
too far then 'groupthink' phenomenon will occur. A member who have an opinion that
differs from the other will have a decrease in performance and low satisfaction.
Status systems. Status system has effect on motivation each member. A member who
have a low status will less motivated than a member who have high status. But this isn't
significantly decreased group performance and satisfaction, it depends on how each
member perceive status systems.
Group size's effect on group performance and satisfaction is related to each member's
effort. More member in a group, tend to less effort performed by each member.
Group cohesiveness have an effect on group performance and satisfaction because it's
related to group's productivity. If member is getting attracted towards group, then
productivity will increase.
Group processes:
Group decision making. Group performance and satisfaction are affected by advantages
and disadvantages of group decision making. Advantages of group decision making
include the following benefits:
Group decision making. Group performance and satisfaction are affected by advantages
and disadvantages of group decision making. Advantages of group decision making
include the following benefits:
a.Generate more complete information and knowledge
generate more diverse alternatives
increase acceptance of a solution
increase legitimacy
Disadvantages of group decision making include:
a. Time consuming
minority domination
pressures to conform
ambiguous responsibility
Conflict management affect group performance and satisfaction by functional conflict
and dysfunctional conflict. There are three types of conflict (task conflict, relationship
conflict and process conflict). So let's try to categorize it when is conflict functional and
when is it dysfunctional.a. Task conflict relates to the content and goals of the work. So
it's categorized as functional conflict because it helps group to have better content and
goals of the work.
relationship conflict focuses on interpersonal relationship. It will make a problem occur
in a group because it's related to private relationship problem that make a decrease in
productivity. So we categorized it as dysfunctional conflict.
process conflict refers to how the work get done. Because it's refers to how the work get
done thus it will pump out the group performance and satisfaction. Thence categorized it
as functional conflict. Group tasks The impact that group processes have on group
performance and member satisfaction is modified by the task the group is doing. More
specifically, it's the complexity and interdependence of tasks that influence a group's
effectiveness.
4. What are “group norms”?
Group norms are the informal guidelines of behavior and a code of conduct that provides some
order and conformity to group activities and operations. These rules are expected to be followed
by all the group members. These norms and rules usually develop gradually and informally as
group members learn as to what behaviors are necessary for the group to function effectively.
These norms may include a code of dress for meetings or being on time for the meetings and
behaving in a predictable manner both within and outside the group meetings.
5. Why are virtual teams not suitable for all situations?
No one tool can provide the complete support. The cost associated with these installation and
maintenance tools is little on the higher side. Conflicts, Lack of Trust & Collaboration - The
cultural differences between the members of virtual teams gives rise to number of conflicts
6. Discuss how having clear goals can make a team more effective
Team goals provide a clear direction and plan-of-action for your team. Team goals create
opportunities to build trust and collaboration. Team goals contribute to the professional growth
and development of new skills among team members. Team goals provide a structure for
measuring individual and group-level progress.
7. List and describe the key benefits of global teams.
First, let’s get a good idea of what a global team actually is. They are workplace groups that are
spread all over the world, and connect and work remotely. So employees from China, the US,
and the UK might all be working together on the same project, but physically not be in the same
space - indeed, they may have never even met!
You might be asking ‘so exactly how do you bring a global team together?’ While you can’t
physically all be together, there are plenty of ways to connect remote teams. These include:
Using tools like interactive displays, which can be installed in one base and connected to
people’s own devices.
Using software devices like Trello, Slack and Zoom.
Remembering special birthdays and events.
Having virtual team building activities.
While there are plenty of challenges that can occur when building a global team, there are also
lots of ways that teams can work together to overcome these challenges.
