Chapter 1
1.Why does Ben hate spending time with his granny?
Because her TV doesn´t work, all granny wants to do in play Scrable and she
stinks of cabbage
2. True or False: Ben’s parents enjoy street dancing.
False. Ben´s mum and dad loved ballroom dancing.
3. Where were Ben’s parents going that evening?
They were going to an arena to see Strictly Stars dancing live on stage.
4. Why did Ben say that his mum often looked like a clown after a car journey?
Because she had a habit of applying make-up in the car, she often arrived
somewhere looking like a clown.
5. What jobs do Ben’s parents have?
The mum worked at the local nail salon, “Gail´s Nails”. The dad worked as a
security guard at the local supermarket.
6. Ben has no brothers or sisters. How do we know this?
He don´t have anybrother or sisters because in the car he was only he, and no
one else ever came to visit his granny.
7. What does Granny look like? Give 3 answers.
She have thick glasses, hearing aid and her hair is white.
8. Why did Ben’s face drop at the end of the chapter?
Because his granny made cabbage soup, and Ben hates cabbage.
Chapter 2
1. What does the title of the chapter “A duck Quaking” refer to?
Littles bubbles of wind puffed out of Granny´s bottom, it sounded like a duck
quacking.
2. What do these words refer to? “Tick tock clink clank whistle tick tock” Explain
Tick, tock was the sound of the carriage clock on the mantelpiece; Clink, clank
was the sound of metal spoons against porcelain bowls and the chistle was the
soind of Granny´s faulty hearing aid.
3. Why did Ben gulp in terror at the end of the chapter?
Because granny trundled back to the carrying a saucepan on a try and she served
him up another bowl of cabbage soup.
Chapter 3
1. What is Ben’s favourite magazine? What is it about?
His favourite magazine is “Plumbing weekly”. It was aimed at professional
plumbers , it was the only thig he enjoyed reading because it was crammed full
of pictures and diagrams.
2. What do Ben’s parents want him to be when he gets older?
They wanted him to be rich and famous, that he will become a proffesional
ballroom dancer.
3. Who is Raj? What type of bargains does he offer?
Raj has a store wich is like a bazaar, he sells magazines, food, Christmas
decorations. Raj offers crazy bargains like “if you buy one box of Cornettos I will
give you ten boxes absolutely free”.
4. What does Raj say about Ben’s granny?
Raj says that his granny is very interesting lady. He thinks that she will have one
secret o two.
Chapter 4
1. How do we know that Granny still thinks Ben is a little boy?
Granny thinks Ben is a little boy because she says him to go to bed at 8 o´clock
and she gives he a bedtime story.
2. What does Ben do in this chapter to make you think that he can be a bit of a
naughty boy to his parents?
Ben hated brushing his teeth and he pretended to brush his teeth.
Chapter 5
1. Who do you think the “old bat” is according to Ben’s mum?
I think Ben´s mum refers to granny when she talks about the old bat.
2. Why do you think Granny seemed different at breakfast?
Granny was quieter, oler maybe and her eyes looked bloodshot as if she´d
Been crying.
3. What’s the surprise in the dish “chocolate surprise”?
The surprise is that isn´t made of chocolate at all. It is in fact 100% cabbage.
Chapter 6, Chapter 7, Chapter 8

1. What does the phrase, “Once again Mum and Dad dumped their only child at
Granny’s” suggest about Ben’s parents?
This phrase said by Ben, means that they only have one child and they leave him
every Friday with his granny where he gets very bored, for them to go have fun
without their only child.
2. Why did Ben want to stay at his Granny’s one more night? Why couldn’t he?
Ben wants to stay at his Granny´s one more night, because he wants to
investigate the diamonds he found in his grandmother's secret cookie tin.
3. Where does Granny go that night and how does she want to break in?
Granny goes to the jewelry store and she wants to get in by breaking the
window with a can of soup.
Chapter 9
1. What’s the black cat?
The black cat is the name of the world's most wanted jewel thief and it was Ben's
granny.
2. Why does Ben talk about Venn diagrams?
Because her granny asks Ben doesn't tell anyone, she also asks him doesn't tell
her parents. Venn diagrams are sets, and Ben thinks his parents are already
included in everyone's set.
Chapter 10
1. When did granny steal her first diamond?
Granny stole her first diamond when she was eleven, the same age Ben is now.
2. Who were Lord and Lady Davenport?
They lived at the top of the hill in the little village where Granny lived and Granny
stole her first diamond ring from them.
Chapter 11
1. Why was Ben sweating? What reason did he give to his mother?
Ben was sweating because he was riding his bike quickly from Granny's house.
Ben told his mother that he was sweating because she had been dancing.
2. Why was Flavio Flavioli kicked out of the show in week two last year?
Because Flavio had been forced to partner Dame Rachel Prejudice, who was so
podgy all he could do was drag her around the floor.
3. What do you think is the meaning of “jump the gun” at the end of chapter
11?
“Jump the gun”, means that Ben's parents were making early decisions, before
Ben was on TV dancing more things had to happen.
Chapter 12
1. Why is chapter 12 entitled “Love bomb”?
Because Ben chose as his dance outfit "Love Bomb" which he thought was the
least worst of all the outfits his mother had made for him.
2. What is the difference between a shotgun and a rifle?
A rifle shoots one bullet and is more accurate. But a shotgun sprays hundreds of
little deadly balls of lead.
3. How did granny manage to make the dogs lose her scent?
Granny crossed the stream and climbed a big oak tree.
Chapter 13
1. What three jewels does granny mention in this chapter? To whom did they
belong?
Granny mentions la huge tiara that had belonged to the First Lady of America,
emerald earings that had belonged to the wife of an enormously wealthy Indian
maharajah and enormous deep blue diamond and sapphire brooch that had
belonged to the last Empress of Russia.
Chapter 14
1. Who is Mr Parker and what is the Neighbourhood Watch?
Mr Parker is the granny´s neighbour. The Neighbourhood Watch is a group of
local people who keep an eye out for burglas.
Granny thinks that Mr Parker is nosy and old git.
2. Why does Ben say that granny is doing her naked yoga?
Because Ben didn't want Mr. Parker will come into the room and will see all the
jewels.
