Muhammad Faiz Marhaditya (5033211055)

Introduction

English is the language of science, aviation, computers, diplomacy, and tourism.

Knowing English increases your chances of getting a good job in a multinational company
within your home country or finding work abroad. It`s also the language of international
communication, the media, and the internet, so learning English is important for socializing
and entertainment as well as work.

English may not be the most spoken language in the world, but it is the official language
of 53 countries and is spoken by around 400 million people across the globe. Being able to
speak English is not just about being able to communicate with native English speakers, it is
the most common second language in the world. If you want to talk to someone in another
country, you can both speak English. The British Council predicts that by 2020, 2 billion people
around the world will learn English. Learning English is important because it makes it easier
for you to communicate with your fellow citizens from around the world. When studying
English at ELC schools, make friends with people from different countries and use English as
a common language.

Many of the best movies, books and music in the world are published and produced in
English. Therefore, when learning English, you have access to a great deal of entertainment
and a better cultural understanding. Speaking English eliminates the need to rely on translations
and subtitles to enjoy your favourite books, songs, movies and TV shows. Watching movies
and TV shows in English is also a great and fun way to learn them! ELC encourages students
to participate in social programs to practice English outside the classroom. Activities include
popular English movies, sports, art galleries, museums, tours and excursions to local and
historic areas. This program is designed to encourage students to use and learn English in
British culture.

According to the Education First report, English is the language of the Internet. An
estimated 565 million people use the Internet daily, and an estimated 52% of the world's most
visited websites are in English. Learning English is important because you have access to more
than half of the content on the Internet. If you can read English, you will have access to billions
of pages of information that may not be available otherwise.

Topic

Talking about the Internet, English can be learned through many platforms and one of
the those is Internet. The Internet can be interpreted as a large global computer network
connecting computer users from one country to another, with a variety of information, from
static to dynamic to interactive. The Internet is widely used in almost every aspect of human
life. In general, the Internet acts as a connection for people around the world through social
networks for exchanging ideas, making new friends, sending electronic messages, exchanging
data, and more. In the Internet will benefit learners as well as businessmen, politicians and
scholars. When it comes to education, the Internet is considered the easiest tool to get
information, literature, or references related to education.

As the use of the Internet and computers increases around the world, it seems clear that
electronic means will shape the learning environment of the future. Instant messaging has been
very popular for some time, and usage of around the world is increasing as more people come
online, especially in developing countries. Other forms of communication over the Internet
include discussion forums, interactive blogs, and online forums. In addition, many English
students can download English music, movies and TV shows to learn about the different
accents and expressions around the world. They can use other virtual environments to develop
language skills while turning their learning tasks into fun hobbies. Social networks such as
Facebook, MySpace, and Second Life have the potential to generate language recognition that
drives young people aged to learn a language especially English.

Many people around the world want to be fluent in English without realizing that they
also need to be proficient in other English skills. As a result of much of the energy of language
education teaches fluently in English conversation , ignoring the importance of including many
other forms of spoken language in the language course, especially when teaching listening
comprehension. I am devoted to. This can be one of many reasons why people have difficulty
hearing in English. English-speaking ability is important, but with globalization, people need
to be fluent in English and all aspects of it, including reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Some people find it easy to hear in English, while others don't.
Independent learning of English on the Internet is one of the most important learning
approaches and primarily reflects the main parts and individual directions of the course.
Depending on the learner situation, they can choose the learning materials, methods, and
learning depth. Organize the course according to their schedule. As we know, research-related
backgrounds, learning abilities, and cognitive abilities vary from person to person. In class,
teachers do not always have time to focus on accepting different levels in particular. Therefore,
it is not efficient. The situation is quite different from the autonomous English learning
approach on the Internet. On the Internet, the course's excellent initiative, abundant choices,
typical course personality, conceptual flexibility of design, comfortable and dynamic
interaction are always offered. Of course, autonomous English learning on the Internet has
some relatively disadvantageous factors, such as the learner's inability to learn English
autonomously, the negative impact of English learning motivation, and other external
environmental factors. Finding a solution to approach the former and overcome ways to avoid
the latter is an important issue. Overall, the autonomy of learning English on the Internet
depends on the learner's internal factors. In addition to teacher supervision, support and
guidance, the learner's subjective will is key to the goal of learning English well on the Internet.

There are many things on the Internet as a supporting tools to learn English. One of
those is movies. Now days, movie can be accessed through the Internet platform such a Netflix
and Disney Plus. Almost all the adult language learners shared the belief that watching English
movies to learn English is beneficial because these movies represent real-life language used by
native speakers of the language. The language used in movies is life, real, and current, and that
makes movies authentic sources of language. According to the language learners, listening to
real language represented in the movies makes language learning more enjoyable and
interesting. Another emerging theme that explains why adult language learners believe that
watching movies helps in learning English is the idea of self-learning. In other words, watching
movies helps a student to individualize the language learning and making the learning process
more appealing and entertaining.

Another skill that was developed as a result of watching movies is pronunciation, and
that is an important aspect of the language. In the present study, participants tended to believe
that movies helped the learner improve their pronunciation skills. Gilakjani (2012) points out
that pronunciation is one of the most significant aspects of language to be taught and learned.
Learners with good English pronunciation are likely to be understood even if they make errors
in other areas, whereas learners with bad pronunciation will not be understood, even if their
grammar is perfect.

Another thing is video games. Many video games are using English on their main
language. The player could learning some new vocabulary that are displayed on the video
games. Through the video games especially the online one, player meet with many people from
all around the world. It forces them to communicate to each other using English. A 2017 study
published in CALICO Journal looked at young people in Denmark who played video games in
English. The study found that those who played regularly outside school scored higher on
English vocabulary tests than their peers who did not.

The next thing is podcast. Podcast can be the one platform to improve Listening skill
in English. Podcast is similar to a radio but it can be replay whenever the listener want to.
Listening some conversation or somebody speaking in English make the listener’s ear used to
hear English language. So, after several times listening some podcast in English, listener are
be able to understand what does the speaker are saying.

The last thing is through the songs. Songs are one of the platform that could improve
both listening and pronunciation skills. Because when it comes across an impressive song, most
learners are eager to take a further step—to understand what the singers are expressing and to
sing it by themselves. With such a motivation, learners will feel surprised they can remember
all the words that appear in the lyrics, even difficult ones. According to these facts, it is ideal
to make the best use of this opportunity and use English songs as an effective, complementary
material in EFL classes.

Conclusion

Learning English is very important for now days life. Many aspect on daily life are
using English as the main language. Learning English can help somebody to be able to
communicate to other people around the world.

Today millions and millions of people worldwide are also an internet subscribers. A
perusal of literature shows the use of internet in different educational and social settings
including coffee shops, public transportations, shops and classrooms. There are countless
resources available to learner through Internet-connected personal computers, and many of
these are useful for studying English.
