Louvers Sizing

Louvers play an important role in ventilating spaces by bringing outside air in and drawing out air. Louver placement and sizing are important, with intake louvers placed at a minimum height of 10 feet and following free area and velocity requirements. To size louvers, one indicates the required airflow, follows standard velocity practices, uses a free area chart to select sizes, and suggests space for louvers while allowing for a safety factor. Louver sizing considers airflow needs, code requirements, and aesthetic concerns.

Louvers in the HVAC industry play a very important role in ventilating spaces.

Borrowing the definition of

louver from wiki links, A louver (American English) is a window blind or shutter with horizontal slats that
are angled to admit light and air, but to keep out rain and direct sunshine. In the HVAC industry, a louver
(intake) specifically functions to bring outside air into space. Exhaust louvers follow similar operational
principle but, draws out air from spaces. Louver sizing is as important as louver placement.

Following are 3 important rules to be followed while placing intake louvers,

1. Louver to be placed at a height of 10 feet from the floor or per the local code.

2. Metal louvers are allowed with maximum of 75% free area and wood louvers with a maximum 25%
free area.

3. In general, the maximum velocity in feet per min will be 500 fpm for intake louvers & 700 fpm for
exhaust louvers. When 50% free area is assumed, 250 fpm for intake louvers and 350 fpm for exhaust
louvers.

Following are the steps to be followed while sizing louvers,

1. Indicate airflow volume for respective space.

2. Follow standard fpm requirements.

3. Use free area chart to finalize on louver sizes.

4. Suggest architect on required free space (Keep 10% Factor of Safety on obtained louver free area)
Free Area will be provided to Architect. Later, Architect will propose for louver opening.

Airflow resistance chart below helps to figure out static pressure drop value.
Louver sizes will be used by HVAC designers and free space requirement will be looked after by
respective architects. On operational perspective, louvers will have placed at least 10 feet away from
interior/exterior contaminant sources. Scientific analysis, common sense & aesthetics play a vital role in
louver placement and sizing. Happy sizing!
