Abstract
Industrial training is an important phase of a student life. A well planned, properly executed
and evaluated industrial training helps a lot in developing a professional attitude. It develops an
awareness of industrial approach to problem-solving, based on a broad understanding of process
and mode of operation of organization. The aim and motivation of this industrial training is to
receive discipline, skills, teamwork and technical knowledge through a proper training environment,
which will help me, as a student in the field of Civil Engineering, to develop a responsiveness of the
self-disciplinary nature of problems in design department. During a period of three months training
at Afrima Consulting Engineering Sdn Bhd, I was assigned to design department, throughout this
industrial training, I have been learned new designing skills that required for the designing steel and
concrete and able to implement what I have learnt for the past years as a Degree in Civil
Engineering student in University Selangor (Unisel).
In first chapter this report is defining the term of industrial training and description on
industrial training objectives. This part explains the details of objectives of industrial training report
and industrial report. In second chapter of report is overview of the company. The third chapter
describes the summary of the duties and various tasks in weekly of industrial training activities that
carried out. The last chapter will talk about recommendation and conclusion.
This training gives students a good experience in concrete and steel design.
Last but not least, trainee got opportunities to learn more about structural design.

Chapter 1
1.1 Introduction to industrial training
Students are required to choose industrial training placement dealing with their respective
course whether it is paid or unpaid. During the training the student are required to works with
professionals so that they can learn and get more from the experts. The students are expected to
utilize the knowledge they got from class and put into practice thus gaining confidence, skills
and practical knowledge. Through this industrial training student are expected to score grades
that will be important for their academic by assessing the report they have submitted and
presenting it at the end of the training period.
The general purpose of this industrial training report is to compile the activity and
achievement during practical. It will normally consist four chapters, chapter 1 and chapter 2 will
talk about introduction and the organization. Chapter 3 is the activity and achievement during
industrial training. Chapter 4 is the recommendation and conclusion.
The main purpose on industrial training is mainly introduction of work experience to the
student where they are given various tasks and responsibilities. After these few weeks the
student will be equipped with all the relevant information of the work places and the work it
requires.
Along the training period, the student will have to apply the knowledge gained in class
and have the opportunity to put it into practice. Student will learn how to operate and interact
with the various aspects in the industry practically thus giving them the confidence in future to
come up ways to manipulate and modify some of the existing problems to suit users or
generally come up with new invention.

Chapter 2
2.1 Company background
Afrima Consulting Engineer Sdn Bhd is a vibrant Malaysian company established to cater the
ever-increasing demand of local and international market for the consultancy services within the
power and energy industry particularly in transmission and distribution networks. Formerly
Afrima was known as PCM Sdn Bhd which was formed in 1999. Our predecessor PCM was
primarily established to support the demand of power consultancy in Malaysia particularly the
development of 500kV backbone of the grid, undertaken by Tenaga Nasional Berhad
(Malaysian power utility company) in the early 90’s to strengthen the Malaysian electricity grid.
Today Afrima Consulting Engineer Sdn Bhd has evolved into an international, multidisciplinary
management, engineering and development consultancy, and recognisably one of the fast-
emerging consultancy firms in the global energy market and lead by industry recognised
professionals.

Chapter 3
3.1 Activity and achievements during practical training
Task6: Rectification to Marshalling Kiosk (MK) foundation using Micropile (200 diameter).
3.2.1 Analysis of a two storey reinforce concrete (RC) building using Orion
This project is Establishment of New 132KV XINYI Switching Station at Melaka, the task
is to design and analyse the double storey building based on the architectural drawing provided
for the floor plan, land size is 21 x 17.5 meter, having two staircases. At the first floor there is
slab opening that wires from the ground floor can go through.
This project is analysed and designed by Orion software. Appendix A is provided structural
drawing plan and 3D view for the building.
6
Figure 3.2.1: Column Reinforcement Design
The project for this task is 40 MW Solar Photovoltaic Plant at Langobya, Malindi,
Kenya. Type of purlin used for the roof is mild steel plain channels and the size of the purlin is
125 x 50 x 3mm thick, the contractor in Kenya requested to change the thickness of purlin roof
to 2mm. The task is to redesign roof purlin with a thickness of 2mm. The first step was to find
new flange size of the C-Section, calculated new flange is 80mm. The new size of the roof
purlin is 125 x 80 x 2mm thick. Thereafter check if the new size satisfies the design standards.
The main reference for this design is BS5950-5-1998 and BS5950-1-2000. Structural drawing
and design calculations are provided at Appendix B.
7
3.2.4 Steel hand rail and post design
This task is under project 40 MW Solar Photovoltaic Plant at Langobya, Malindi, Kenya. The
task is to design hand railing to satisfy design standard. For the railing, loads are first calculated
using BS6369-1-1997 and then connections is checked for shear resistance using BS5950-1-2000.
Design calculations are provided at appendix D.
3.2.5 Check top deflection of 15-meter-high reinforce concrete (RC) blast wall
This task is under project establishment of PMU 500/275kv Junjung, (3x1050MVA). The task
required for this project was to check the deflection of a blast wall which is to be placed between
two transformers at the site. The deflection should be less than H/500 where H is the height of the
wall.
In order to calculate the deflection, the wind load on the blast wall is first calculated using
BS6399-2-1997, there after the deflection is checked, the deflection calculated was 3 ⋅ 342 ×
1012 mm, in this case, the deflection of the blast wall was more than the allowable deflections. To
overcome this deflection failure is to not consider the whole hight of the wall which is 15-meter
because it has different deflection, the best way to solve this problem is to check the deflection of
each span. Design calculations are showed in Appendix E.
This task is under project extension of 500Kv at Olak Lempit 275/132Kv Substation. The main
task in this project is to design a micropile to a support a marshalling Kiosk which is tilting due to
ground settlement and the design should satisfy design standards.
The structural capacity of the micropile is checked as well as the area of steel provided using
reference to BS8110-1:1997. Calculation are showed at Appendix F.
This task is under project Medamit to Lawas town Transmission Line support system for 6m x
6m x 3.5m excavation for tower. Since the depth of excavation is 3.5-meter, its necessary to provide
temporary support for the excavation therefore shoring is provided.
The size of steel plate and steel waler beams is 10mm thick, 100 x 100 x 10mm thick
respectively. All the design calculations are provided at appendix G.

Chapter 4
4.1 Recommendation
I would recommend that the university must find and be ready for internship place that
students can go without confusion especially foreign students
I would like to suggest the duration for the industrial training is not enough, up to 6 months
would be better.
4.2 Conclusion
I have completed my industrial training successfully at AFRIMA Consulting Engineer. The
duration for the internship was 12 weeks. The aim was to expose students with the working
environment, to enhance and supplement the knowledge and skills of students, to develop students in
term of ability, competence and interpersonal relationship, to expose and familiarize the students to
rules and regulations, and to develop the spirit of team working among students and other working
group members.
Be a competent Civil Engineer was not an easy job. A strong mentality needed when working
under pressure. But I also learned from the company that ethics is more important than skills. I am
grateful to learn something very valuable from this company since there is not many companies which
upholds ethics more than skills. I was able to understand the concept of a technical and engineer
during my training and challenging myself to become a creative engineer in the future. Even though
I encountered few challenges during this training period, I am still glad that I have managed to learn
a lot of new knowledge and gain more experience. Besides that, through various projects I had
completed, I had also built my hands-on abilities. In short, the behaviours I had experienced through
workplace learning are really helpful for me to face challenges in working environment in the future.
Industrial training was relevant to be participate once passed all the subjects in Bachelor in
Civil Engineering Programme because Civil Engineering subjects found equipped each other in
creating a design. Thus, a student must be well prepared with their civil theoretical knowledge before
pursue Industrial Training. I consider many things important throughout the industrial training like
critical thinking, team working and problem solving. Thus, I gladly finished my internship in this
company, which I hope will pave my road in becoming an engineer and making true of my dream.
Praise be to Allah for all the things that He have done for me to complete this industrial training
session without any big obstacle.
