WORM GEAR Basic Formula for Worm Gear (Helical

gear)
Worm gearing is used to transmit motion 1. Circular Pitch
and power between nonintersecting
shafts, usually at 90° to each other. The 𝜋𝐷𝐺
drive consists of a worm on the high-speed 𝑃𝑐 =
𝑇𝐺
shaft which has the general appearance of
a power screw thread: a cylindrical, helical where:
thread. The worm drives a wormgear, PC = circular pitch
which has an appearance similar to that DG = diameter of worm gear
of a helical gear. Sometimes the wormgear TG = number of teeth of the worm gear
is referred to as a worm wheel or simply a
wheel or gear. 2. Diametral Pitch

𝑇𝐺
𝑃𝑑 =
𝐷𝐺

𝑃𝐶 𝑃𝑑 = 𝜋

where:
Pd = diametral pitch
PC = circular pitch
DG = diameter of worm gear
TG = number of teeth of the worm gear

single threaded worm. Single Thread, TW = 1
Double thread, TW = 2
Triple thread, TW = 3

4. Lead: It is the axial distance that a 8. Velocity Ratio
point on the worm would move as the
worm is rotated one revolution. 𝑅𝑉 =
𝑁𝑊
=
𝑇𝐺
𝑁𝐺 𝑇𝑊

𝐿 = 𝑇𝑊 × 𝑃𝑎
where:
𝑅𝑉 = velocity ratio
where:
NW = rpm of the worm, rpm
L = lead, in.
NG = rpm of the gear, rpm
TW = number of threads
TG = no. of teeth in the gear
Pa = axial pitch, in.
TW = no. of teeth in the worm

5. Axial Pitch:
9. Pressure angle for the worm
𝑃𝑎 = 𝑃𝑐
tan 𝜙𝑁 = tan 𝜙 cos 𝜆
where:
where:
Pa = axial pitch of the worm, in.
𝜙𝑁 = normal pressure angle
PC = circular pitch of the gear, in.
𝜙 = pressure angle
𝜆 = lead angle, deg.
6. Lead Angle: It is the angle between the
tangent to worm thread and the line
perpendicular to the axis of the worm.

𝐿
tan 𝜆 =
π DW

where:
𝜆 = lead angle, deg.
L = lead, in.
DW = diameter of the worm, in.

7. Center distance

𝐷𝐺 + 𝐷𝑊
𝐶=
2

Where:
𝐶 = center distance, in.
DG = diameter of the gear, in.
DW = diameter of the worm, in.
