QUESTIONNAIRE
A questionnaire is a paper containing a list of questions including the specific place and space in the paper
where you write the answers to the questions. This prepared set of questions elicits factual or opinionated
answers from the respondent’s through his or her acts of checking one chosen answer from several options or
of writing on a line provided for any opinionated answer.
Purposes of Questionnaire
1. To discover people’s thoughts and feelings about the topics of the research
2. To assist you in conducting an effective face to face interview with your respondents
3. To help you plan how to obtain and record the answers to your questions
4. To make the analysis, recording, and coding of data easier and faster
First set of questions- opening questions to establish friendly relationships, like questions about the place, the
time, the physical appearance of the questions participant, or other nonverbal things that are not for audio
recording.
Second set of questions- generative questions to encourage open-ended like those that ask about the
respondents inferences, views, or opinions about the interview topic.
Third set of questions- directive questions or close-ended questions to elicit specific answers like those that
are answerable with yes or no, with one type of an object, or with definite period of time, and the like.
Fourth set of questions- ending questions that give the respondents the chance to air their satisfaction, wants,
likes, dislikes, reactions, or comments about the interview. Included here also closing statement to give the
respondents some ideas or clues on your next move or activity about the results of the interview.
The following are tips on interview question formulation from various books on research that you have to
keep in mind construct effective questions to elicit the desired data for your research study:
