STD-InSP-0003 (Coded Marking Procedures LATEST)

This document provides a procedure for attaching and removing thermocouples using a capacitor discharge machine. It outlines responsibilities, references applicable codes and standards, and step-by-step instructions for cleaning the job surface, placing the magnetic return clamp, gripping the thermocouple wire, discharging the capacitor to weld the wire, repeating for the second wire, and finally cutting and smoothing the welded area after heat treatment. Quality control includes visual inspection of the attachment areas.

CODED MARKING PROCEDURE.

1. Scope:

This procedure describes the method of attachment & removal of thermocouples to the
Equipment with Capacitor Discharge Machine.

2. Responsibility:

2.1 Quality Manager

2.2 Inspection Engineer

2.3 Auxiliary services Engineer.

3. Reference:

3.1 ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1 & 2, ASME Sec.1, B31.1, NBIC.

3.2 Latest Edition and Addenda on the day of use of this procedure.

4. Procedure for Thermocouple attachment & Removal.

4.1 Ensure the machine Battery is fully charged.

4.2 The location of Thermocouple fixing on jobs shall be as per approved Heat
Treatment Request.

4.3 Before start of thermocouple attachment Approved WPS is to be taken from

welding engineering department. WPS shall be prepared in accordance with
ASME Sec. IX insofar as possible describing Capacitor discharge Equipment, the
combination of materials to be joined and the technique of application.
Qualification of Welding procedure is not required.

4.4 Ensure cleaning of area on the job surface thoroughly where the thermocouples
are to be fixed. Preferably use of wire Brush or files or any suitable accessories
like sander/Grinder/Wire brush wheel may be used to accomplish the same.
Proper care is to be taken so that it shall not impair the thickness of job.

4.5 Once the area is cleaned, place the magnetic return clamp of Capacitor
Discharge unit on the clean surface area of job.

4.6 After ensuring the magnetic return probe attached to the job firmly, Grip one
end of Thermocouple wire with the holder plier closely near the tip of wire and
hold it firmly against the job where it is to be fixed.

4.7 Press the discharge push button of capacitor discharge machine to enable the
discharge to take place so the tip of thermocouple wire gets welded to the
surface. The duration of pressing the push button for discharge shall be
maximum of 5 seconds. The energy input is limited up to 125 Watt-seconds.

4.8 Repeat the same as above for welding of second wire of the thermocouple
adjacent to previous weld but not more than 6mm away. This is the second wire
of one thermocouple.

4.9 After completion of Heat treatment thermocouple wires are to be cut at approx.
5-10 mm from the surface of job and the junction of thermocouple & job
surface shall be merged smooth with grinding.

4.10 Visual inspection is to be carried out with job for attachment removal area.
