Electric current and its effects
1. Explain two reasons for overflow of electric current in an electric
circuit.
The two reasons could be:
i) Short circuit occurs when two wires- live and neutral wire
come in contact with each other (due to wear and tear of
the wire at times) and allow large flow of current to pass
through it.
ii) Over Loading- Connecting of too many electrical appliances
to the same socket can draw large amount of current.
6. If the current flows through wire, does the wire behave like a
magnet? How can you test it?
Ans:
When the current flows through any wire, a magnetic field is
developed around that wire or coil and it behaves like magnet.
It can be tested by placing a magnetic compass around the
wire, it will show deflection of the needle. Also iron pins can be
kept nearby that wire and if they get attracted to the coil, it
shows the wire has become an electro magnet.
Ans:
(a) No, the amount of heat produced in both the wires will be
different because amount of heat produced in a wire on
passing electric current depends on the length of wire and here
length is different for both the wires. More heat will be
produced in wire of length 10cm.
(b) No, the amount of heat produced in the wire of same length
but different thickness cannot be same because amount of
heat produced in a wire also depends on the thickness of the
wire. Thick wire produces less heat and thin wire (offers more
resistance) produces more heat.
