JDM A17.2 APPROVED FOR SUPPLIER
DISTRIBUTION

1 Scope

1.1 JDM A17.2 specifies general requirements for unified inch series externally threaded fasteners,
including:

 Materials and mechanical properties,

 Product marking,
 Screw threads,
 Dimensions and tolerances,
 Part finish, passivation, and coatings,
 Inspection and quality assurance, and
 Packaging identification.

Note 1 John Deere is in process changing the status of Enterprise unified inch hardware to “Not for New Design”.
New designs should incorporate metric hardware in new designs. In the event metric hardware cannot be utilized,
existing unified inch hardware may be found in RECON, or units may create their own unit part number.

1.2 JDM A17.2 applies to bolts, screws, studs, and similar externally threaded parts with unified inch
screw threads of nominal diameters 1.500 in and smaller.

1.3 JDM A17.2 does not apply to the following:

 Fasteners not under tensile stress, such as set screws,

 Fasteners which cut or form mating threads, such as wood screws, tapping screws, thread
cutting, thread forming or thread rolling screws, or
 Heavy hex bolts and screws, or heavy hex structural bolts.

1.4 JDM A17.2 does not specify requirements for the following:

 Weldability,
 Corrosion resistance in service environments,
 Ability to withstand temperatures above +500˚F (+260˚C) or below -60˚F (-50˚C),
 Resistance to shear stress, or
 Fatigue resistance.

1.5 This standard can contain mandatory provisions, which are identified by the words “shall” or
“required”. Compliance with the mandatory provisions is required to claim conformance with this standard.
This standard can also contain guideline provisions, which are generally identified by the words “should”
or “recommended”. Compliance with the guideline provisions is not required, because they might not be
appropriate for all machines or all applications.

2 Terms and Definitions

2.1
coating
Surface covering applied to the substrate of a part and specified in the part designation.

2.2
fastener
Part that transfers load by joining two or more parts, with or without the use of threads.

Note 2 Parts are considered to be fasteners if they are covered by ISO 1891. Examples of fasteners include bolts,
screws, nuts, weld nuts, flat washers, spring washers, split pins, and blind rivets.

2.3
finish
Final surface treatment of a part prior to application of any specified coating.

2.4
non-fastener
Part whose function is not primarily for joining two or more parts.

Note 3 Parts are considered to be non-fasteners if they are not covered by ISO 1891. Examples of non-fastener
parts include tubing, brackets, pulleys, and tie rods.

2.5
stud
Cylindrical rod of moderate length, threaded on either one or both ends or throughout its entire length,
and either straight or bent, such as U-bolt parts. It does not apply to headed, collared or similar products
more closely characterized as bolts.

3 Designation System for Grades

3.1 Carbon and Alloy Steels – Grade Designations

Carbon and alloy steel material and strength grades are designated by the JDM number shown in
Table 1. The use of JDM designations allows for more than one SAE grade to be provided within a
JDM designation.

Summary of Changes from Previous Edition
(For Information Only — Not Part of the Standard)

Added clause 1.5 for new text about mandatory and guideline provisions.

Added clause 2 for terms and definitions.

Added clause 4.2 requiring conformance to coating clarifications as stated in JDS-G252. Added
statement that JDM F15 A2C is assumed for fasteners with an incomplete coating designation of “zinc”.

Modified clause 5.2 to align with latest revision of ASTM F593. ASTM F593 now requires product marking
instead as a supplementary option. Material identification supplementary requirement has changed to
supplementary requirement heading “Alloy Control”. JDM A17.2 refers to the heading instead of test
number because the test number changes more often within the ASME document.

Removed reference in clause 5.3 to ASTM F468 supplementary requirement, S4, individual part marking
because the 2013 revision of ASTM F468 changed the part marking from supplementary to full
requirement within the body of the standard.

Added clause 8 requiring freedom from hexavalent chromium.

Changes to Table 3:
SAE J123 has been cancelled because of the equivalency to ASTM F788. Table 3 modified in
JDM A17G product except screw threads to require surface discontinuity compliance to ASTM F788
with the addition of mandatory requirement of S1, Assemblies Subject to Severe Dynamic Stresses.
SAE J1061 has been cancelled and replaced by ASTM F788. Updated Table 3 accordingly for
JDM A17D and JDM A17F groupings.
