Baby Hat And Mitts Set

Sizes:
Hat~ Baby, Toddler~
16 (17)" / 40.5 (43)cm circumference.
Mitts~ Baby, Toddle~
Circumference- 4 (5)" / 10 (12.5)cm
Length- 4.5 (5.5)" / 11.5 (14)cm

Materials:
Any DK yarn of your choice.
You will need approx 130 yrds to work up
1 hat and pair of mitts.

Colors: A – Your choice, B – Your choice- 1 skein each color.

Size US5 (3.75mm) 16" (40cm) circular needle.


2 Size US6 (4mm) 16" (40cm) circular needles;or size needed to get gauge.
You will need to divide the stitches between the 2 circular needles when the stitches
start to stretch too tight around the needle.
Stitch Markers: 5.

Gauge: 22sts and 26 rounds = 4" (10cm) in St st worked in rounds on larger size needle.

Pattern ~ Hat
With smaller size needle and A CO 90 (95) sts.
Being careful not to twist sts around needle place stitch marker and
join for working in rounds.
Work k1, p1 rib for 3 (4) rounds.
Change to larger size needle and color choice B.
Work in St st until piece measures 4.5 (5)" / 11.5 (12.5)cm; at the same
time placing stitch marker every 18 (19) sts on the last round.

Decrease round:
Continuing in St st work until 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm, repeat at
each marker until end of round.
Work decrease round every round until 5sts total remain.

◆◆If you want to make an I-cord at the top of the hat skip down to *I-cord*.

If you do not want an I-Cord; continue as follows:


Cut yarn leaving an 8" (20cm) tail. Using your tapestry needle draw through remaining
5sts and pull to close. Pull tail to inside and weave in your ends.

*I-cord*
Slid the 5sts to end of one circular needle.
Work I-cord as follows:
*Knit all sts. Do not turn work, but slide sts to the other end of needle.
Drawing yarn up back of work.*
Repeat from * to * until I-cord is the desired length.

Cut yarn leaving an 8" (20cm) tail; or longer depending on length of your I-Cord.
Using your tapestry needle draw yarn through the 5sts and thread down the center of
I-cord and weave in your ends on the inside of the hat.

Pattern ~ Mitts
Cuff
With color choice A and smaller needles, CO 22 (28)sts.
Place marker and join for working in the round, being careful to not twist the stitches.

Work rib as follows:


*K1tbl, p1; rep from * to end.
Repeat last round 6 (9) more times.

Body
Change to larger size needle.
Working in St st work 3 rounds.

Change to color choice B.


Work in St st until piece measures 3.5 (4.5)" / 9 (11.5)cm from CO edge.

Mitts Top Shaping


Round 1: K4, ssk, k1, k2tog, k4 (10), ssk, k1, k2tog, k4. 18 (24)sts
Round 2: Knit.

Round 3: K2 (3), ssk, k1, k2tog, k4 (8), ssk, k1, k2tog k2 (3). 14 (20)sts
Round 4: Knit.

Round 5: K1 (2), ssk, k1, k2tog, k2 (6), ssk, k1, k2tog, k1 (2). 10 (16)sts
Round 6: Knit.

Toddler size only:


Round 7: K1, ssk, k1, k2tog, k4, ssk, k1, k2tog, k1. 12sts
Round 8: Knit.

Cut yarn leaving an 8" (20cm) tail. Using your tapestry needle draw through
remaining 10 (12)sts and pull to close. Pull tail to inside and weave in your ends.

I-cord
With larger size needle and color choice A, pick up three stitches from the inside
of the cuff close to the bottom rounds and at side of mitt.
Work an I-cord for approx 26" (66)cm or desired length you would like.
BO.
mCut yarn leaving an 8" (20cm) tail and thread it through the remaining sts. Use the tail
to sew the I-cord to the inside of the second mitten.
Weave in ends.

BO- bind off
K- Knit
p- purl
A- color choice
B- color choice
sts- stitches
tbl- through the back loop
St st- knit all rounds
k2tog- knit two stitches together ~ ssk & k2tog
ssk- Slip, slip, knit ~ SSK & k2tog
sm- slip marker
rep- repeat
