Advantages of Diesel Power Plant

2. The construction of diesel power plant is simple.
3. The diesel power plant can be easily installed at any place where the
demand for power is very less.
4. Time required to start and stop this power plant is very minimum as
compare to time take by other plants to start and stop.
5. It starts quickly and easily picks up the load variations.
6. The maintenance cost is minimal as compared to the thermal and steam
power plants.
7. It requires minimum quantity of water which is essential for cooling
purpose.
8. For the installation of the power plant, sufficient area that is required is
very less.
9. This plant does not require more labours or workers under operation
conditions.
10.The diesel power plant has more thermal efficiency as compared to the
steam power plant.
11.It is widely used as a standby set in compact areas (like as hospitals, cinema
houses, industrial machineries, etc.) that can provide a
continuous power supply to the load.

Disadvantages of Diesel Power Plant

As the diesel (fuel oil) is costly, thus the diesel power plant has high running cost.
The diesel power plant can only be used to generate small power. The cost of
lubrication of a diesel engine is generally high. The diesel power plant does not
work satisfactorily under overload conditions for a long period of time. The

maintenance cost of a diesel power plant is generally high.

Diesel Power Plant

What is Diesel Power Plant?

An electric power generating station in which the chemical energy of diesel is converted into
electrical energy is known as diesel power plant. In other words, the diesel power plant is a
power generating plant in which diesel engine is used as the prime mover for the generation of
electrical energy.

How is Electricity Transmitted?

After electricity is generated in power plant, it is time for transmission. This is
done by using step-up transformers that increases the voltage. This high
voltage electricity is transmitted through a network of electrically conductive
wires of aluminum or copper. These lines are called high-voltage transmission
lines that can transmit electricity over long distances.
How is Electricity Distributed?
Electricity is distributed via electric distribution substation. At the substation,
the high voltage electricity from the high-voltage transmission lines is passed
through step-down transformers that lower the voltage. The electricity is then
transmitted to network of local electric distribution lines. Before electricity
enters a home, the voltage is again lowered using step-down transformers. In
most countries the voltage is 220 V AC or 110 V DC. In a home, electricity is
distributed to different outlets by network of wires through electrical wiring.

Definition Of Diesel Electric Power Plant

A generating station in which a diesel engine is used as the prime mover
for the generation of electrical energy is known as a diesel power plant.
For generating electrical power, it is essential to rotate the rotor of an
alternator by means of a prime mover.

The prime mover can be driven by different methods. Using a diesel

engine as the prime mover is one of the popular methods of generating
power. When the prime mover of the alternators is a diesel engine, the
power station is called a diesel power station.

The mechanical power required for driving alternators comes from the

combustion of diesel. As the diesel costs are high, this type of power
station is not suitable for producing power on large scale in our country.
But for small-scale production of electric power, and where, there are no
other easily available alternatives of producing electric power, a diesel
power station is used.
How Electrical Power Produce Using Diesel
Power Plant?
In a diesel power station, the diesel engine is used as the prime mover.
The diesel burns inside the engine and the products of this combustion
act as the working fluid to produce mechanical energy. The diesel engine
drives an alternator that converts mechanical energy into electrical
energy.

As the generation cost is considerable due to the high price of diesel,

therefore, such power stations are only used to produce small power.

Although steam power stations and hydroelectric plants are invariably

used to generate bulk power at cheaper costs, yet diesel power stations
are finding favors at places where the demand for power is less,
sufficient quantity of coal and water is not available and the
transportation facilities are inadequate.

These plants are also standby sets for continuity of supply to important
points such as hospitals, radio stations, cinema houses, and telephone
exchanges.

1. Diesel Engine
It is the main component used in diesel-electric power plants for
developing mechanical power. This mechanical power we use to run the
generator & produce electrical energy. For producing electrical energy,
the diesel engine is mechanically coupled to a generator.

When the diesel fuel burning inside the engine, it starts to produce
mechanical power. The combustion of diesel fuel produces increased
temperature & pressure inside the engine. Due to this pressure gases are
f Air blows into the generator until it compresses and then diesel injects.
The combination of compressed air and diesel fuel causes the air to
combust, starting the generator. The heat from the engine converts to
mechanical energy where it enters the alternator and converts the
energy into electricityormed, this gas pushes the piston inside the diesel
engine, and then mechanical power is produced. With the use of this
mechanical power, the shaft of the diesel engine starts rotating.

How does Diesel Power Plant Work?

In a diesel power station, diesel engine is used as the prime mover. The
diesel burns inside the engine and the products of this combustion act as the
working fluid to produce mechanical energy. The diesel engine drives
alternator which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Diesel generators convert some of the chemical energy, contained by the

diesel fuel, to mechanical energy through combustion. This mechanical
energy then rotates a crank to produce electricity. Electric charges are
induced in the wire by moving it through a magnetic field
