Lesson Techniques and Performances
1 Practices Applied to
Contemporary Arts

In this lesson we will explore amazing Techniques and Performances Practices


in creating Contemporary Arts like Smocking, Papier Mache, Pottery and wood
carving. Get ready as we put into Practice all the learning that we will bring into life
using selected medium and techniques in making aesthetic artwork.

Technique refers to a particular method in which artist utilize materials and


master tools in doing specific artwork that involves practical skills. The nature of the
medium (material) determines the techniques. For example, textile is woven, wood is
carved, clay is molded and shape, stone is chiseled.

Techniques in Making Smocking


Smocking (Hand Smocking) – is an embroidery technique utilize to gather
fabric so that it can stretch.
Materials (Medium)- textile 1 ½ Yard Satin for Pillowcase, Needle, thread
same color of textile, Marker, Meter Stick (for Pattern measurement).

Basic Steps in Smocking

1. Do the pattern on the wrong side of the fabric, create 2 inches for the
borders, then start making grid using meter stick it can be 1”x1” or 2”x2”.
2. Proceed with the pattern markings x for diamond and flower and diagonal
for leaves.
3. Put a thread in the needle and make a small stitch under the first dot, from
one side of the square until all the sides of the square or dot is stitch and
repeat.

Techniques in Making Paper Mache (Papier-Mache)

Paper Mache (Papier Mache)- is a French


word which means (“Chewed Paper”) consist
of paper fibers and binding agent, it is
originates from China; They used papier
Mache to make helmets of all things.
Examples have been found dating back to
the Han Dynasty (BC 202- AD 220).

In the Philippines one of the Pinoy Art is Paper Mache found in Paete
Laguna for its Taka Making, the first recorded Taka making was by a woman
name Maria Bague in the 1920’s. She has wooden molds that were covered in
strips of paper dipped in a sticky paste. She would later paint them colorfully
and presented as children’s toys.

Basic Steps in Paper Mache
Materials (medium)

Salt
Vaseline (Petroleum jelly)
Emulsion Paint
Paint Brush

Step 1
To get started simply tear the newspaper into strips about 3 inches
long, put to one side and then start to make glue.
Step 2
To make your glue take a large bowl and mix one-part sieved flour with
one part of water (e.g., 1 cup flour and 1 cup water, or 1/2cup flour and ½
cup water) until you get a thick glue-like consistency.
If you think it’s too thick just add a bit more water a teaspoon at a time. Mix
well with a wooden spoon to get rid of all the bumps. Finally, add a few
tablespoons of salt to help prevent mold.
Step 3
Paste the strips of paper on both sides with a paintbrush- its best to do
this on a flat with covered surface, turning them over with paintbrush as you
go.
Step 4
If you’re using an object to create a certain shape- such as bowl- be
sure to smear the half that you’re applying the strips to with a very light layer
of Vaseline, this makes it a lot easier to remove once the Mache has dried.
Though you could always use a balloon then simply burst to remove.
Step 5
Using your fingers, place your glue-soaked strips one at a time over the
object you’re covering and smooth down with your brush to release air
Bubbles. Repeat this process three times to really layer it up.
Step 6
Leave to dry, when it is completely dried out, you can gradually build
up more layers to get the required strength and thickness of Mache.
Step 7
When it is all completely dry- this may take overnight- paint with two
coats of emulsion paint to seal it, leave to dry then paint your desired color.

I. The basic steps below for making Cemented Pot using used cloth are in
random order. Select the correct position (1st, 2nd,3rd, etc.) for each step; put them in
correct order from 1st to last step.
________ 1. Put the fabric into the mold, brush the excess cement let it dry for 10
hours in a shady area. Don’t place under the sun.
________ 2. Paint again the surface of the pot let it dry.
________ 3. Pot made of cement and used t-shirt is now ready for planting.
________ 4. Pour the ½ cement and 1 ½ glass of water into the basin to create a
mixture.
________5. For t-shirt remove the sleeves, and cut the side of the t-shirt, fold the
fabric crosswise then fold it again crosswise until you create triangle
shape.
________6. Again, let it dry, then paint the surface of the pot using acrylic paint 1st
coating let it dry in a shady area.
________7. Dip the fabric into the mixture, make sure that all the fabric is coated with
the mixture from bottom to tip and outer to inner.
________8. Cut the tip of the triangle to create the hole of the Pot at the center.
________9. Prepare 6-10 tablespoons of cement and 50 ml water, mix it together to
create a mixture. Then paint the mixture into the surface of pot.

Step 1
For T-shirt remove the sleeves, and cut the side of the T-shirt, fold the
fabric crosswise then fold it again crosswise until you create triangle shape.
Step 2
Cut the tip of the triangle to create the hole of the pot at the center.
Step 3
Pour the ½ cement and 1 ½ glass of water into the basin to create a
mixture.
Step 4
Dip the fabric into the mixture, make sure that all the fabric is coated
with the mixture from bottom to tip and outer to inner.
Step 5
Put the fabric into the mold, brush the excess cement let it dry for 10
hours in a shady area. Don’t place under the sun.
Step 6
Prepare 6-10 tablespoons of cement and 50 ml water, mix it together to
create a mixture. Then paint the mixture into the surface of pot.
Step 7
Again, let it dry, then paint the surface of the pot using acrylic paint
1st coating let it dry in a shady area.
Step 8
Paint again the surface of the pot let it dry.
Step 9
Pot made of cement and used t-shirt is now ready for planting.

Wood carving- is the process of cutting into the surface of wood to produce
shape and pattern using chisel.

Lesson Discusses Local Materials Used in
2 Creating Art
Contemporary artists are becoming more aware of the abundance and
diversity of our natural resources. They now incorporate local and indigenous
elements in creating their artwork because they believe that using local materials
can instill a sense of belonging and emotional relationship between our people and
our spaces. Hence, they are now becoming more sensitive in choosing the appropriate
kind of art material to be used in crafting their artwork.
In this module, we are going to discover the different local materials that
Filipino artists have utilized and are currently employing in the creation and
expression of the Filipino contemporary arts.

Philippines is blessed with abundant natural resources in which


contemporary artists utilized in creating basic and useful artworks. They used raw
materials from trees, plants, shells, and other natural resources and transformed
them into simple, yet useful artwork.
Materials
Artists need physical materials to work on. They are the means by which the
artists make their feeling or thoughts visible. Through them, they transform their
idea or experience into something tangible in order to be received by their audience,
viewer, or listener.
Local Art Materials
It is imperative that artists should know what materials they will be using in
creating their artworks. Local materials are the resources that can be found readily
in large quantity at a particular location or area at a certain time. It could also be
referred to as materials that can be used to fabricate a finished element.
Kinds of Local Art Materials
Contemporary artists make use of local art materials in crafting several
artworks to create sense of belonging and showcase their creativity and
resourcefulness. The following are the kinds of local materials that can be found in
the country.
1. Abaca. Abaca, or Manila hemp, belongs to banana family. Its fiber has a
natural luster with colors ranging from pure white to ivory and dark brown. It
is a great material for furniture and décor and artists choose this material
because of its durability and availability.
2. Bakbak. It is the outermost covering or leaf sheath of the abaca stalk. It is a
flat thick durable sheath as twine or braided. The strong brown fiber used to
make furniture.

3. Bamboo. It is used as a raw material in creating many products. It is used in
construction, textile, musical instruments, weapons and many more.
4. Buntal. It is a cylindrically shaped fiber. The supple ivory white strands are
quite durable, pliable, and have good dyeing qualities.
5. Buri. It is extracted from the matured leaves of the buri palm. The fiber is
durable and resistant to moisture.
6. Capiz or Kapis Shell. It is a bivalve marine mollusk in the family of
Placunidae. They are abundant in the Philippines commonly found along the
coastal waters. Cleaned and processed Capiz shells are used for various
artistic applications like windows, lanterns, and walling.
7. Coconut Shell or bao. It is used for wood carving, improvised cooking utensils
and myriads of other uses. Laminated coconut shells are considered as almost
the same as the quality and appearance of turquoise shells or ivory.
8. Pandan. It is a tropical plant. The fibers found in Pandan leaves are proven to
be ideal in making handicrafts such as bag, wallets, plants, mats, baskets,
and other similar products.
9. Rattan. It belongs to a palm family. There are different types of palms such
as high or low climbers, single stemmed or clustered rattan species.
10. Santol Wood. Santol is mostly known for its fruit that is popularly consumed
and used as an ingredient, but it can also be used as a material for artwork.
It is less dense than Narra or Molave. It is way easier to work with and polish.
It is also highly resistant to wood borers (bukbok) which makes it ideal for
skeletal framework.

3 Application of Techniques
In contemporary art numerous techniques by artists are used in the
production and creation of different art forms. These brings a unique perspective
into the artistic community, and each is valued for its influence in contemporary
art.

Graffiti
It ranges from simple written words to
an elaborate wall painting that are sometimes
scribbled, scratch or painted on walls. It is
also used to express underlying social and
political messages and a genre of artistic
expression.
Graffiti art has its origins in New York
in 1970s when young people began to spray
paint and other materials creating images in
buildings and sides of the subway trains. It
can be seen in a bright graphic image and
stylized monogram.
Collage
From the French meaning “to glue”
describes the technique of composing artwork
by gluing wide range of materials like paper,
fabric, newspaper clippings and other ready-
made materials. It is a dominant technique in
Dada, Surrealist, Pop-Art, and Neo-Dada
movements.

Decollage
A French term which means to
“unstick” and commonly applied to artworks
where original image is torn, cut, or removed
from the original object. The phrase generally
refers to the work of French Nouveau Realists
that ripped old posters from walls and
mounted them on canvas. Etresissements and
cut-up technique are examples of Decollage.
Lacerated posters are also a similar technique,
it is a poster placed over another or others and
the top poster have been ripped, revealing to a
greater or lesser degree the poster or posters
underneath.

Land-art
Earthworks or earth arts movement where
landscape and work of art are inextricably linked.
It is created in nature with the use of natural
materials like soil, rock, organic media, and water
which introduced materials such as concrete,
metal asphalt or mineral pigments. The art is
usually in the open, located away from the people
which is left to change and erode under natural
conditions. Sculpture is not placed in the
landscape rather; the landscape is the means of
their creation.
Digital Arts
The artistic work or practice that used
digital technology as essential part of the creative
or presentation process. Its impact has
transformed activities such as paintings,
drawings, sculpture, and music/ sound art with
new form. Digital Art is the term applied to
contemporary art that uses the method of mass
production or digital media.
Mixed-Media
It is the artwork using more than one
medium. A work of visual art that combines
traditionally distinct visual art media. Many
effects can be achieved by using mixed media. It
can be used in conjunction with the traditional
artist to attain a wide range of self-expression.

Printmaking
The process of making artworks by
painting normally in paper. Prints are created by
transforming in k from a matrix or through a
prepared screen to a sheet of paper or other
material.

Artistic Skills and Techniques

Most of the Contemporary artists do not have formal studies in fine arts. Most
of them have self-taught skills. Concerned with the development of their talent and
skills in artmaking, they study on their own, interact with artists and read a lot about
lives of artists and their artworks. They also explore the materials in hardware stores,
experiment with chemical reactions on their base material.
In this lesson, we will learn the meaning of “artistic skill” and “technique”
through actual and hands-on activities. We will also learn that artists’ choice of
material and how they use these materials are at the heart of making art, and that
these involves process and transformation.

ACTIVITY 1: OBSERVE

and answer the process questions.

ARTISTIC SKILLS
With the broadening of the art world, many people are getting confused about
what qualifies as an artistic skill. Artistic skills are abilities that are possessed by
artists who operate within a fine art capacity.
Each artist uses different mediums to develop their artistic skills. A medium
is defined as the material, or the substance out of which a work is made. Through
these materials, the artists express and communicate feelings and ideas.
The medium also defines the nature of the art form as follows:
1.Sculptor uses metal, wood, stone, clay, and glass. Sculptures fall within the
category of “three-dimensional” arts because they occupy space and have volume.
Pottery is a form of sculpture. Other examples are ritual objects such as bulul wood
carvings in the cordillera, or the santos or carvings of saints in Christian churches.
2. Architect uses wood, bamboo, bricks, stone, concrete and various building
materials. Buildings are also called “three-dimensional”. However, architecture has
the added element of time since we move into structures.
3. Painters uses pigments; it may be watercolor, oil, tempera, textile paint, acrylic,
ink, etc. and uses different medium such as wood, canvas, paper, stone wall such
as cave paintings.
4. Photographer and Filmmaker use the camera to record the outside world. The
filmmaker uses the cinematographic camera to record and put together production
design, sound engineering, performance, and screenplay. In digital photography and
film, the images can be assimilated into the computer, thus eliminating the need for
celluloid or negatives, processing chemicals, or print.
TECHNIQUE
Technique is the artists’ way to use and manipulate materials to achieve the
desired formal effect, and communicate the desired concept and this is according to
his or her personal style it may be modern, Neoclassic, etc.
Technique involves tools and technology, ranging from most traditional
example of this is carving, silkscreen, analog photography, and filmmaking to the
most contemporary.
Art Techniques:
1. Collage – is the technique of an art production used in the visual arts where the
artwork is made from on assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.
Collage may sometimes include magazines and newspaper clippings, ribbons, paints,
bits of colored or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs,
and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas.
2. Decollage – is the opposite of collage; instead of an image is being built up all or
parts of existing images, it is created by cutting, treating away or otherwise removing
pieces of an original image. The French word “Decollage” in English means “Take-off”
or “To become Unglued” or “To become unstuck”. Example of decollage include cut-

up technique. Similar technique is the lacerated poster, a poster in which one has
been over another.
3. Graffiti – are writing or drawings that have been scribed, scratched, or painted
illicitly on a wall or other surface, often in a public space. Graffiti range from simple
written words to elaborate wall paintings. Graffiti may express underlying social and
political messages, and a whole genre of artistic expression is based spray paint
graffiti styles.
4. Land Art – earth works, or earth arts is an art movement in which landscape and
the work of art are inextricably linked. It is also an art form that is created in nature,
using natural materials such as soil, rock (bed rock, bolders, stones), organic media
(logs, branches, leaves), and water which introduced materials such as concrete,
metal asphalt, or mineral pigments.
5. Mixed Media – It refers to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally
distinct visual art. For example, work on canvas that combines paint, ink and collage.
When creating a painted or photograph work using mixed media, it is important to
choose the layers carefully and allow enough dying time between the layers to ensure
the final work will have structural integrity, if many different layers are imposed.
Many effects can be achieved by using mixed media. Found objects can be used in
conjunction with the traditional artist to attain a wide range of self-expression.

ACTIVITY 5: EGGSHELL MOSAIC MAKING
Create a contemporary art using the eggshell mosaic art technique.
Materials:
• 1 Oslo paper
• Eggshells (cleaned and dried)
• Glue • Watercolor/ acrylic paint/ dye/ other coloring materials
• Pencil
• Marker
STEPS IN MAKING EGGSHELL MOSAIC
Step 1. Decide on a theme or idea for your collage (example ideas: landscapes,
flowers, event, etc.). Sketch it first on your Oslo paper using a pencil.
Step 2. Using the marker, outline your sketch.
Step 3. Take your eggshells and break them into small pieces. Arrange the
eggshells onto the paper. Make sure you do not cover the outline of your
sketch.
Step 4. If you are satisfied with the arrangement of the eggshells, carefully
glue the pieces of eggshells together. Let it dry.
Step 5. Add accent pieces using the coloring material. Using watercolor,
acrylic paint, dye or other coloring materials, color the eggshells according to
your taste and creativity.

you'll be aware of the diverse contributions of numerous art forms in the country's
various areas. Now is the chance to show appreciation for these Filipino artists that
inspires us on how to celebrate life even in times of uncertainties. You are now ready
to present your final contemporary arts output.

Filipino artists have different ways in creating their masterpiece and their
ingenuity makes it one of a kind. Before you begin to showcase yours, let us be
mindful of the techniques to improve your artwork. These principles by Ms. Lori
McNee can be applied in realistic/abstract painting, photography, weaving,
handicraft, design, and other form of arts.

1. Create an Inspirational Work Environment - At the end of each workday,
clean, organize, and declutter your creative surroundings so you can focus
on your creativity. This will help you improve your creativity, efficiency,
and artistic abilities. An artist's visual performance is influenced by the
type of lighting, its intensity, color, and direction so make sure to use
appropriate lighting.
2. Have a concept in mind before you begin - An idea is the starting point
for all artistic endeavors. A concept is a mental image that will aid the artist
in expressing how something will be completed. It is preferable to have a
concept engraved in your mind or in a sketchbook before you begin to
enhance your painting. A traveler without a map is like an artist without a
concept.
3. Composition - Composition literally translates to 'putting together' with
conscious thought, and it can be applied to any work of art. The
arrangement and placement of visual elements make up the composition
of your art. There are a variety of compositional strategies that can help
you generate a sense of coherence and aesthetic appeal in your artwork.
4. Learn to see the negative shapes or space - It is critical for artists to see
the spaces between and around the objects. These spaces are significant
because they contain relative positioning and proportions that do not exist
in the objects themselves. Learning to see and draw the shapes that make
up an object's lines will help you correctly render your subject.
5. Understand the color wheel - Colors that are complementary to one
another are found on the color wheel. Color has been used to enhance our
environments by artists, designers, and interior decorators for many years.
Color can be used to create a specific mood, a message, or a sharp response
in the viewer. Understanding color will vastly improve and enliven your
artwork.

6. Understand cool and warm colors – Cool colors with blue undertones
have a calming effect. Cold colors have icy blue undertones and tend to
convey emotions ranging from happiness to violence. Warm colors have
yellow undertones and tend to convey emotions ranging from happiness to
violence. Hunger is triggered by the colors red, orange, and yellow. This is
why restaurants such as McDonald's and Burger King use these colors in
their logos and advertisements.
7. Learn to see value - Value, believe it or not, is more crucial to the design
and success of a painting than color. Because the human eye is drawn to
a light element against a dark element, value is employed to establish a
focus point inside a painting or drawing. The focal point of interest is
created as a result of this. Gradations of value are also utilized to generate
the appearance of depth. Subject matter is given a three-dimensional
illusion of form by areas of light and dark.
8. Keep it simple - Overly detailed paintings or photographs confuse and
distract the observer, making it difficult to identify the subject. The
unnecessary content in most strong works of art is edited out, allowing the
observer to focus on the important items.
9. Use Rhythm- Rhythm is established in art when motions follow a
predictable rhythm. Rhythmic patterns can be found in a variety of media,
including photography, glass art, pottery, sculpture, realism, and abstract

art. Rhythm can be utilized to carefully shift the viewer's eye over a piece
of art. Color patterns, light patterns, texture, and paint application can all
be employed to give the work a sense of rhythm and vitality.
10. Determination- Any artist's success depends on their dedication,
determination, and desire to grow. Every artist develops at his or her own
rate. Be patient with yourself and congratulate yourself on your artistic
progress.

The important responsibilities that artists, cultural workers, and art


communities play in promoting the arts in the Philippines have also contributed to
the country's continued vibrancy. The art and culture of the Philippines have
flourished over time thanks to the efforts and assistance of numerous art groups as
well as the major cultural bodies, the NCCA and the CCP.
Now is your chance to show your gratitude and appreciation for these artists'
valuable, amusing, and occasionally daring initiatives. Are you ready young artists?
Let me tour you around into the different aspect that make up a production.
The Production Team
A masterpiece isn't an art until it's created by a master. Every piece of art has
a brain and a heart that gave it life. To be able to produce your own production
masterpiece, you must first learn about the duties and responsibilities of the
individuals who create them—the production team.
There will be no coordination issues if a production is planned by a single
artist. In the artwork, he is the only master. If, on the other hand, a production
involves numerous artists working together, efficient communication and
coordination of the artists should be a key component of the strategy. A producer or
production head must be aware of the obvious division of labor in collaborative
artworks such as theater, cinema, and other art displays. This is also a
demonstration of trust and respect for the work of the other members.
The Writers
A collaboration of writers is involved in the creation and development of the
concept and script that will be used in the performance in a class production. This
team is in charge of contributing to the writing of the entire plan, including the
director's ideas, turning the theme into a narrative, and making the actors' speaking
lines clear, simple, easy to understand, and aligned with the concept.
The Director
The director is the team's overall supervisor. He or she is in charge of making
the concept and script a reality. He or she assembles the cast and assigns roles,
costumes, lighting, and sound effects, among other things. Aside from these
qualifications, he or she must be open-minded and willing to accept suggestions.

The Actors/The Performers
The roles of the actors or performers are more clearly defined. They must
follow the director's or choreographer's instructions. The primary actors/performers
are free to improvise and interpret the role in their own unique way.
The Backstage Crew
The backstage team is in charge of the show's practical aspects. After the
presentation, the staff ensures that the showplace is cleaned and in order. The
success of the production is dependent on everyone on the team, because if there is
a setback, it will influence the entire class.
The Concept
There are several approaches, but the most common is to engage in some
brainstorming, generating as many ideas as possible, ranging from the mundane to
the bizarre, crazy, weird, and even nonsensical. All suggestions are respected and
accepted without prejudice. This concept or idea is developed and transformed into
a narrative for the production.
The Plan
After you've determined your goals, you can begin planning. This is the link
that will help you organize your human and material resources. Make a list of the
requirements for making things happen. Assign specific tasks to individuals. Make
a schedule for the tasks and rehearsals. Remember that this is a collaborative
project, so teamwork is essential.
The Presentation
The performance day arrives, and everyone is nervous. The production begins
at the specified time. This is the time to show off the planned production and
teamwork of all members.
The Feedback
It is possible for the teacher to solicit feedback from the audience at the end
of the presentation. Following that, all members gather to provide and receive
feedback. Feedback is required to obtain information about the presentation's
outcome. Participants provide feedback on what went well and what needed to be
tweaked. The goal of feedback is to provide constructive criticism. and should not be
interpreted personally.
