DEFINING
GLOBALIZATION
Gregorio, Grace G.
globalization
is a difficult term to define because it has come to
mean so many things. In general, globalization
refers to the trend toward countries joining together
economically, through education, society and
politics, and viewing themselves not only through
their national identity but also as part of the world
as a whole. Globalization is said to bring people of
all nations closer together, especially through a
common medium like the economy or the Internet.
DEFINING
RELIGION
Pacaro, Angel Aiquel S.
Religion
is perhaps the most difficult
subject to study from an
objective point of view. Some
people are deeply committed to
their own religious beliefs and
are not interested in examining
alternative view that they
believe are “weird” threatening,
or utterly ridiculous. Others do
not believe in supernatural
beings and are skeptical of
sociology’s concern with
matters that appear to be
beyond the realms of science.
defining
Religion
System of socially shared symbols,
beliefs, and rituals that is directed
toward a sacred, supernatural realm
and addresses the ultimate meaning
of existence.

RELIGION

VARITIES OF RELIGION

Animatism

Animism Church

Social Organization of Sect

religion
New Religious
Ecclesia movement
1 ANIMATISM

is a system of
beliefs in which
supernatural forces
rather than beings
(gods and spirits)
are the dominant
power in the
universe.
2 ANIMISM

is the belief that

spirit beings
inhabit the same
world as humans,
but on another
plane of
existence.
SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS
3 OF RELIGION
The idea of religious visionaries
can capture the public
imagination and inspire change,
even social revolution. But in
the long run, the relative
influence of any religion
depends on religious
communities that are organized
to promote religious ideals and
objectives. Sociologist classify
religious organizations into four
ideal types- ecclesia,
denomination, sect, and cult.
4 ECCLESIA
The ecclesia is a
large formally
organized religious
body that includes
most members of
society and is
supported by and
closely allied with
secular and state
powers.
DENOMINATION OR

6 SECT

A sect is a small, less

formally organized
group that usually
has separated from a
denomination and is a
negative tension with
larger societies.
NEW RELIGIOUS
7 MOVEMENT
A new religious

RELIGION AND
Functionalism
01
Religion can promote social solidarity
through common symbols, belief, norms,
and collective rituals.

For Functionalists religion is an organ

02
in the organism, a sub-system within
It may provide also provide individuals and
the system, an interlocking and
groups with emotional comfort and
necessary institution which plays a
support, morale and motivation, and a
role in the creation and maintenance

of the velue consensus.

03
All societies through religion require
collectively and rituals for their cohesion and
survival.
DURKHEIM FUTHER EXPLAINS THAT
RELIGION HAS A ROLE TO PLAY IN

WHERE LAW IS AUTOMATIC AND FINAL
i.e 'the law of the Gods is absolute'

DURKHEIM EXTRAPOLATES HIS ANALYSIS

FUTHER BY ARGUING THAT RELIGION IS A
DISGUISED WAY FOR PEOPLE TO
WORSHIP THE SOCIETY ITSELF.
OTHER FUNCTIONALISTS HAVE CHOSEN TO
FOCUS IN RELIGIOUS RITUALS AND
CEREMONIES TO SEE THEIR SIGNIFICANCE FOR
INNDIVIDUALS.

ACTS OF COLLECTIVE WORSHIP;

CHRISTENINGS, WEDDINGS AND FUNERALS,
SERVE TO REINFORCE SOCIAL VALUES.

THE CONFLICT
PERSPECTIVE OF
RELIGION: KARL MARX
Sulay, Alexander T.
The conflict perspective
of religion: Karl Marx

Karl Marx and other 19th century

German social theorist believed
that the world would be a better
place without religion. To their
thinking, religion was the weapon
by which wealthy and powerful
groups maintained their privileged
position and oppressed those
beneath them in the social
hierarchy.
“RELIGION IS THE SIGH OF THE
OPPRESSED CREATURE, THE
SENTIMENT OF A HEARTLESS
WORLD, AND THE SOUL OF SOULLESS
CONDITIONS. IT IS THE OPIUM OF
THE PEOPLE.”
-Karl Marx
RELIGION AND SOCIAL
CHANGE: MAX WEBER
Lim, Ryle Christopher
RELIGION AND SOCIAL
CHANGE: MAX WEBER
Max weber’s comprehensive
study of religions worldwide
revealed that while some were
fact highly conservative,
others- in particular,
Protestants and Puritanism in
Western Europe and America-
inspired major social and
economic movements.
SECULARIZATION AND
RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS
Lacastesantos, Klein
Secularization and
Religious Movements
Rodney Stark (1990, p. 201) argued
that during the past century, only
one social science thesis had near
universal acceptance: the
secularization thesis, which
maintains that the global spread of
modernization and of more rational
and pragmatic approaches to life
inevitably leads to the decline of
small-scale societies that are based
on traditional and religious
worldviews.
RELIGION TO COPE
Gomonod, Vince
Religion to cope
It has been difficult for religion to
cope with values that accompany
globalization like liberalism,
consumerism, and rationalism. Such
phenomena advocate scientism and
secularism.
Liberalism
Political doctrine that takes protecting
and enhancing the freedom of individual
to be the central problem of politics
Consumerism
is a social and economic order
that encourages the acquisition
of goods and services in ever-
increasing amounts.
Rationalism
a belief or theory that opinions and actions
should be based on reason and knowledge
rather than on religious belief or emotional
response.
Scientism
Scientism is an ideology that promotes science
as the purportedly objective means by which
society should determine normative and
epistemological values. The term scientism is
generally used critically, pointing to the
cosmetic application of science in
unwarranted situations not amenable to
application of the scientific method or similar
scientific standards.
Secularism
Secularism is the principle of the
separation of government institutions and
persons mandated to represent the state
from religious institution and religious
dignitaries (the attainment of such is
termed secularity).
IMPACTS OF
GLOBALIZATION ON
RELIGION
Manlin, Kaycee N.
Impacts on
Globalization of Religion
The evangelical Christian’s missionary activity across the
nations.
Emerging multi-religious phenomenon.
Increasing conflicts about different religious assumptions
about other’s freedom and different religious behavior.
An explosive and revolutionary movement against globalism,
and the development of religious terrorists.
Religions are narrowly used to justify national identity
Religion and Globalization are in conflict.
