A few hundred years later, someone discovered that the long wing feathers of
a swan or a goose made good pens. The end of the feather was sharpened into a
point. These were called quills. Quills were used for many years

To write on paper, it was necessary to add steel tips to the quills. In 1884, the
first fountain pen was invented. These pens were filed with ink and wrote until the
ink was gone. Then the pen could be filled again.

Fountain pens were mainly used until 1944. Ball-point pens were nvented

were first made.
