    1. Describe the narrator.


    The narrator, Gus Sullivan is a smart and partially responsible ten year old boy who lives in
    a poor neighborhood in Ireland named East Cork for the first half of the twelfth century.

    2. Why does the narrator stick close to the house? What is he worried about?
    The narrator sticks close to the house because he’s worried about his mother and wants to
    be close just in case something happens to her.

    3. Why does the narrator drink down the medicine? What does he realize after he’s
    done it?
    The narrator was peer pressured into drinking the medicine by a girl, after he realizes it’s
    finished, he begins to cry.

    4. Is the narrator mature or immature? While considering this question, highlight or


    at least two quotations that exemplify the narrator’s maturity or immaturity.
    The narrator shows characteristics of both maturity and immaturity. Immaturity when he
    drank his ill mother’s cough syrup then used his last pennys on candy. Maturity when he
    stayed home from school to help take care of his mother.

    5. Is there a lesson to this story? What is the lesson


    The lesson to this story is to always concentrate on the outcome and not be distracted.
    When drinking the cough syrup with the girl, the narrator was distracted and not thinking
    about his ill mother.

    Children seem to emulate their parents and behave according to how their parents behave
    towards them. This statement is true and is proven when Gus Sullivan, the narrator treats
    his mother similarly to how she would treat him when he’d be sick. In the story ‘The Man Of
    The House’ the narrator stays home from school to take care of his ill mother and even goes
    on to purchase medicine for her. If the narrator was sick and taken care of by his mother,
    the same act would be done but in a more mature manner.
